Synthetic (artificial) grass, specifically designed for use with dogs, is a cost-effective solution that offers a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment for dogs. Presented here are the health, safety, performance, and cost benefits of installing synthetic grass specifically designed for dogs; its suitable applications; design considerations; installation factors; and maintenance guidelines.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

• Describe synthetic grass and its advantages over natural grass and other surfacing options in terms of decreased maintenance and increased durability, versatility, sustainability, and aesthetics.
• Recall how blade construction, backing design, and the use of an appropriate base (including a grid and flushing system when installed over a solid surface) facilitate drainage of urine and water, fostering a nontoxic, clean, dry, slip-resistant, cushioned surface that is comfortable for dog paws and humans.
• Specify a dog-specific synthetic grass system appropriate for the surface material and installed with the drainage required to ensure the efficient passage of surface fluids to maintain a dry, sanitary surface.
• Explain how maintenance protocols, including removing debris and waste, applying a bacterial enzyme, and rinsing the synthetic grass, reduce exposure to contaminants and create a safe and more hygienic environment for dogs, their owners, and facility staff.
