During the height of the pandemic, healthcare organizations and their design partners worked quickly to manage the crisis and adapt facilities to curb the spread of COVID-19. As we moved beyond the immediate crisis, many of these efforts evolved into broader strategies aimed at mitigating longstanding sources of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). The focus shifted from short-term emergency measures to long-term improvements in healthcare safety, resilience, and infection control, laying the groundwork for more effective responses to both future outbreaks and everyday clinical challenges. Many of these solutions quickly become standard best practices in the design of healthcare facilities, while others have quickly vanished from the discussion. In this session, we will highlight the key changes and review why certain solutions have been sidelined due to cost, feasibility, operations, and patient experience challenges. We will also review several innovative concepts that never made it off the drawing boards that may be worth resurrecting.
