Designing Beyond Compliance: Architecture for True Accessibility

This course explores how understanding disability can guide the creation of accessible and inclusive spaces. It examines access opportunities in educational and public environments, with an emphasis on strategies that go beyond code compliance. These approaches can help meet credit requirements in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2 by improving usability, promoting occupant well-being, and reducing long-term barriers through design solutions.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

• Implement accessible design strategies that support LEED v5 and WELL v2 objectives by exceeding minimum code requirements to improve occupant experience and inclusion.
• Apply multisensory and high- and low-stimulation design strategies during early planning to improve comfort, navigation, and long-term adaptability while meeting LEED v5 and WELL v2 requirements.
• Incorporate quiet zones, clear transitions, and wayfinding elements that align with LEED v5 and WELL v2 objectives to create spaces that support independence and meet diverse occupant needs.
• Draw on universal design principles to support a broad range of physical, cognitive, and neurodivergent needs.
