From Blueprint to Blue Bin: Managing Waste, Hygiene, and Facility Performance

This course explores some of the tools at the core of sustainable facility management and how they can enhance indoor environmental quality, reduce environmental impact, and improve occupant well-being. It reviews how operational strategies can support organizational performance and talent attraction and retention in a changing workplace landscape. The course examines emerging trends, new tools and practices, and shifts in certification frameworks such as the LEED® v5 Operations and Maintenance and Building Design and Construction rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2 that reflect the growing demand for measurable performance and decarbonization efforts.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss how waste diversion, sustainable cleaning, and maintenance enhance occupant health, environmental performance, and long-term building value, aligning with LEED v5 and WELL v2 goals.
  • Describe how evolving green building programs like LEED v5 and WELL v2 emphasize measurable performance outcomes across ongoing operations and reflect a shift toward operations and facilities management in workplace sustainability and wellness.
  • Identify effective waste management strategies, sustainable product selection, and cleaning practices that reduce environmental impacts and contribute towards meeting LEED v5 and WELL v2 requirements.
  • Assess how sustainable maintenance and operational strategies contribute to indoor environmental quality, employee satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and talent attraction and retention in today’s evolving workplace.
