Biophilic Design: Contributions to Green Building Certifications
Biophilic design is a methodology for designing buildings and landscapes that improve human health and well-being while fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. This course provides an overview of biophilic design and its frameworks and how it can help projects earn certification through LEED® v4.1 Building Design and Construction (BD+C): New Construction, WELL Building Standard™ version 2, Sustainable SITES Initiative® v2, and the Living Building Challenge (LBC).
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
Define biophilic design and explain the frameworks that provide structured principles and strategies to integrate nature into built environments.
Discuss how integrating nature and natural elements throughout a project’s interior and exterior can contribute toward meeting the requirements in WELL v2, LBC, and the LEED v4.1 BD+C rating system
Describe how providing visual and physical connections to the outdoors and restorative spaces aligns with biophilic design goals and the requirements in WELL v2, LBC, SITES, and the LEED v4.1 BD+C rating system.
Explain how providing geographical, historical, ecological, and cultural connections through design can meet the requirements in WELL v2, LBC, and the LEED v4.1 BD+C rating system.
