Noise Control in CLT Floor/Ceiling Systems

Noise Control in CLT Floor/Ceiling Systems

This course examines the unique acoustical challenges associated with cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor/ceiling systems in multifamily and mixed-use buildings. Participants will explore why CLT, while structurally efficient and sustainable, presents inherent limitations in sound control—particularly for impact noise—and how these issues affect occupant comfort, building performance, and risk exposure. The course explains core acoustic principles, including STC, IIC, mass law, damping, decoupling, and flanking paths, with specific application to tall wood and CLT construction. Attendees will review tested and field-proven above-floor and below-floor sound control strategies, such as gypsum and concrete toppings, resilient sound mats, floating floor assemblies, resilient channels, isolation clips, and ceiling configurations. Emphasis is placed on balancing performance, constructability, weight, and cost. Through system comparisons, target performance benchmarks, and cost overviews, the course equips architects and design professionals with practical guidance for selecting economical, high-performing acoustic assemblies. The session concludes with key design takeaways that highlight the importance of early coordination, detailing, and strategic investment to reduce post-occupancy complaints, improve tenant satisfaction, and mitigate long-term liability in CLT buildings.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe the inherent acoustical limitations of cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor/ceiling systems, including challenges related to airborne and impact sound transmission.
  • Identify design strategies used to improve STC and IIC performance in CLT assemblies, including the roles of mass, damping, decoupling, and sound isolation.
  • Evaluate above-floor and below-floor acoustic treatment options for CLT systems based on performance, constructability, and project-specific design considerations.
  • Compare the economic impacts of various acoustic upgrade strategies in CLT floor/ceiling systems, including cost, assembly complexity, and long-term performance value.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered via webinar or face-to-face presentation. Available sessions shown below.
