Area Separation Wall Systems: Designing Better Fire and Sound Protection

Area Separation Wall Systems: Designing Better Fire and Sound Protection

This course provides an overview of the benefits of using moisture resistant fiberglass gypsum shaftliner panels in 2- and 3-hour area separation wall systems for multi-family, multi-level construction. It covers proper installation practices, key detailing requirements, and common special conditions encountered in the field. The course also compares alternative systems used to achieve required fire resistance ratings, helping participants understand performance differences and appropriate applications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Compare the performance advantages of fiberglass gypsum shaftliner panels in 2 and 3 hour area separation walls to alternative systems such as OSB with magnesium oxide coatings, concrete block, paper faced assemblies, and paired one hour firewalls.
  • Describe the proper installation requirements for 2 and 3 hour area separation walls and all associated system components.
  • Identify the relevant International Building Code (IBC) requirements for fire blocking in multi-family construction.
  • Recognize correct detailing for roof transitions, parapets, exterior wall intersections, floor connections, exterior wall interfaces, and offset slabs and partitions.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered via webinar or face-to-face presentation. Available sessions shown below.
