Selecting a Vertical Lifting Solution

Large vertical openings can enhance the functionality, flexibility, and occupant experience of residential and commercial spaces, but their design requires careful consideration of operation, safety, energy and acoustic performance, materials, and environmental conditions. This course examines vertical lifting door types, operating systems, safety features, performance considerations, and design options. It also explores strategies that support energy efficiency, thermal and acoustic comfort, indoor air quality, daylight, and connections to nature and contribute to requirements in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) and Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Compare vertical lifting door types, operating systems, and safety features to select appropriate solutions for specific applications and performance requirements.
  • Explain how vertical lifting door design, seals, glazing, and materials can support energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and acoustic performance in LEED v5 and WELL v2 projects.
  • Identify material and finish strategies that support low VOC emission, indoor air quality, and sustainable product selection requirements in LEED v5 and WELL v2.
  • Describe how glazing and operable vertical openings can support exposure to daylight and views, connections to nature, and occupant well-being in LEED v5 and WELL v2 projects.
