Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials throughout the world, and as such, it is in everyone’s best interest to consider more sustainable options. This course provides an overview of the properties of slag cement. Discussion topics include benefits, effects on plastics and hardened concrete, environmental profile including life cycle analysis (LCA) and environmental product declarations (EPDs), and various slag cement applications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe what slag cement is, how it is made, and a brief history of its use.
  • Describe the properties of slag cement, including physical and chemical characteristics, and the different types of blended cements in use today.
  • Define slag cement's benefits including higher strength, better concrete workability, easier finishability, lighter color, sustainability, and effects on plastic and hardened concrete properties.
  • Discuss slag cement's contribution to sustainability with recycled content, reduced energy consumption, and greater reflectivity, including life cycle analysis and environmental product declarations.

Approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. Delivered online, at your own pace.
