Mechanical vibration and structure-borne noise exist in all building environments. Depending on how severe the disturbance and how sensitive the equipment, the problems caused by the vibration or shock can be negligible or destructive. This course explains why, during the entire building design process, it is essential to consider what a building is being used for and the potential impact of vibration and structure-borne noise, not only from external sources but also from equipment running within the building.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain the difference between structural vibration and structure-borne noise and why if left unaddressed, they will result in repair costs, human discomfort, and losses in efficiency.
  • Define resonance and discuss how to avoid it, because excessive vibration can cause health problems for the users of machinery and other occupants of the building and undue stresses on mechanical equipment.
  • Discuss natural frequency and disturbing frequency as related to the frequency ratio, and realistic approaches to solve vibration and structure-borne noise problems by anticipation, identification, analysis, design, and testing.
  • Assess potential solutions to a variety of structural noise and vibration concerns to determine the effectiveness of vibration isolation systems in reducing the transmission of noise and vibration from mechanical equipment onto a building structure.

Approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. Delivered online, at your own pace.
