Synthetic thatch provides designers with the opportunity to create a roofing system that delivers the beauty and wonder of a natural thatched roof combined with the durability of a commercial-grade building product. Reviewed in this course are the applications, design and installation considerations, and performance advantages of synthetic thatch compared to a natural thatch solution.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Discuss the history of roof thatch and the applications of synthetic thatch designed to provide a more durable, fire-resistant, and sustainable alternative to natural thatch.
- Explain the unique regional thatching styles, colors, and textures that are available to meet a range of design aesthetics.
- State the considerations relating to the proper selection of synthetic thatch to ensure the product meets safety codes and provides the aesthetics of natural thatch combined with a long life cycle.
- Summarize the design, fastening, and installation process of both palm and reed thatch over a variety of roof substrates and constructions, including open structures, weatherproof decks, and round/octagonal umbrella structures.
