NAEYC Accreditation Standard 9 - Physical Environment

Overview of the NAEYC Accreditation Standard 9 - Physical Environment. This course will go over the requirements for the physical environment of an early learning center to be considered NAEYC Accredited.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify how furnishings and finishes affect indoor air quality, and specify low-emitting, third-party-certified materials to reduce children's exposure to VOCs and other harmful chemicals.
  • Apply developmentally appropriate sizing and layout criteria - seating and table heights, sight-line supervision and circulation - to reduce injury risk and enable constant staff supervision.
  • Determine minimum spatial requirements that safeguard occupants - usable area per child, sleeping-mat spacing, separation of diaper-changing from food areas, and handwashing proximity.
  • Evaluate physical-environment features that provide equitable access for children with special needs and that offer comfortable, private spaces that protect occupants' welfare and dignity.
