Structural Silicone Glazing

Structural Silicone Glazing (SSG) is an advanced construction technique for facade systems where a specialty silicone sealant is utilized for glass bonding and transferring wind loads to the curtainwall frame. SSG systems have offered architects, consultants and owners the ability to design a façade with unique aesthetic features while offering improved thermal performance since the 1970’s. This presentation discusses the benefits of the SSG technique and explores its history and future prospects. In addition, the benefits of silicone are reviewed and the reasons why SSG can be an excellent choice for many building projects.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

• Review the evolution of SSG as a viable construction method as well as history and trends to date.
• Explore the concept of SSG, variants of the type, and benefits of this method including thermal, seismic, and blast mitigation.
• Cover SSG design topics including proper joint geometry, allowable design stress as well as relevant precautions regarding durability and compatibility.
• Understand the basic properties of silicone rubber and why it is the only sealant chemistry suitable for SSG.
