What Design Professionals Need to Know About Segmental Retaining Walls

Whether you are planning terraces in a courtyard setting, a 4’ wall on a property line, or planning a wall over 20’ tall to create a larger building pad, a segmental retaining wall can likely solve your grade separation challenge. Segmental retaining walls offer designers almost unlimited options for grade changes. But what system is appropriate for your application? Is “Design by Others” the most economical option for you and your client? In this presentation, we will review general wall categories, reinforced vs unreinforced walls, size and depth of units, wall batter, and best practices for wall engineering. We will also review how soil, or the lack of suitable soil, impacts wall stability and the economics of a project. Fencing and guard rail options will also be discussed in relation to long-term occupant safety

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Learn/understand basic wall categories relative to the dimensions and weight of the blocks.
  • Learn best practices to properly incorporate and graphically represent segmental walls on a plan.
