Understanding Wood Grain and How to Specify It

Understanding Wood Grain and How to Specify It

A deep dive into the types of natural and sawn wood grains and how they appear on the ends and faces of boards. How those grains can be created and the pros and cons of each type of grain. Finally a close look at how to specify wood grain and what allowances can be made while still maintaining the design intent for the wood material in the specification.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify the basics of natural wood grain structure across a variety of species and how that will present in a physical board.
  • Identify the sawn wood grains and how they are created from the log. Additionally why a particular grain is sawn and what the pros and cons of each grain pattern are.
  • Identify variations in wood grain among common wood species and be able to differentiate those species and describe how they will perform and appear by wood grain alone.
  • How to write a specification that clearly cites the wood species and grain pattern desired for a project using terms that are clear and will eliminate guesswork at the builder and lumber dealer level.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered via webinar or face-to-face presentation. Available sessions shown below.
