Practical Envelope Design: Fastener Penetrations Of Control Layers And Tube Seal Solutions

Practical Envelope Design: Fastener Penetrations Of Control Layers And Tube Seal Solutions

Controlling moisture is critical to a healthy building and to creating a health indoor environment for its occupants. This course examines envelope performance, with a focus on fastener and anchor penetrations through water, air, and thermal control layers and their impact on assembly integrity. Participants will explore attachment solutions of exterior continuous insulation and rainscreen facades using tube seals to maintain air and water control while reducing thermal bridging. Real-world applications and testing data are presented alongside a mass timber case study near Zion National Park, demonstrating practical, system-based design strategies applicable to a wide range of construction types that help ensure truly sustainable built environments.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recognize the role and importance of each control layer in a healthy building envelope- including AWRB, exterior continuous insulation, rainscreen façades, etc.
  • Assess how fastener and anchor penetrations affect critical control layers—especially in moisture-sensitive structures like the mass timber case study.
  • Explore smarter tube seal attachment solutions – how full-system wall testing validates performance, plus the key tools A&Es use to design for structural, thermal efficiency, air/water control, and fire propagation that contribute to healthy and safe buildings.
  • Systematize with proven performance & practical design—review the testing behind tube seal solutions and the essential specification tools for efficient, durable, and healthy envelope design.
