Tornadoes and hurricanes are among the most powerful and destructive forces in nature, capable of causing catastrophic damage, widespread disruption, and loss of life in a matter of moments. Because of this, the ability of buildings to withstand these extreme events is not just important—it is essential, particularly for facilities that serve as emergency response hubs, community shelters, and designated safe rooms. In this course, we will explore the critical standards and certification requirements that guide resilient design, including FEMA 361, ICC 500, Miami-Dade County approvals, and ASTM E1886/E1996. We will also examine key testing parameters, system configurations, glazing solutions, and other essential design considerations for window and door systems that ensure buildings are engineered to protect and secure both people and assets when it matters most.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Understand the storm impact standards used in the security market.
  • Understand the different standards between hurricane impact and tornadic impact.
  • Compare and contrast the appropriate glazing systems for storm impact protection.
  • Compare and contrast the framing materials available for storm impact protection.
