Architect’s Guide to Gypsum Board Systems: Performance, Products & Applications

Architect’s Guide to Gypsum Board Systems: Performance, Products & Applications

Explore the essential characteristics of gypsum board and how material selection impacts building performance. This course clarifies the differences between paper-faced and fiberglass-mat-faced gypsum products, offering guidance on when and why to specify each. Gain historical context on gypsum as a raw material and understand the distinctions between natural and synthetic (byproduct) gypsum board. Dive into the modern manufacturing process and discover how evolving technologies are shaping the next generation of gypsum solutions. Special focus is given to advanced products designed for today’s demanding architectural applications—including acoustically enhanced panels, abuse and impact-resistant boards, and gypsum systems engineered for extended weather exposure. Whether you are designing for durability, acoustics, or sustainability, this course equips you with the knowledge to make informed, performance-driven specifications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Understand the gypsum board manufacturing process, including the use of natural and synthetic (byproduct) gypsum raw materials, and how these choices affect sustainability and performance.
  • Review exterior gypsum board products—such as sheathing, soffit board, and shaftliner—and evaluate the benefits and limitations of paper-faced, cement board, and fiberglass-faced options for various applications.
  • Identify the appropriate gypsum board for specific performance needs, including abuse- and impact-resistant boards. Learn how to apply relevant test standards and match products to their intended use to ensure system integrity.
  • Review interior gypsum board products and their acceptable applications. Understand what qualifies a board as mold- and moisture-resistant based on industry standards, and where these products should—and should not—be used.
