Whirlpool Corporation Ahead of Schedule to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions – Raises Target Even as Company Grows

November 14, 2007

CEO announces significant increase in commitment during keynote address BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (Nov. 14, 2007) – Whirlpool Corporation has announced it will increase the company’s commitment to environmentally-sound business practices by reducing total greenhouse gas emissions 6.6 percent by 2012. The company will make these global, voluntary reductions while at the same time increasing production by 17 percent. The positive output of this reduction is equivalent to approximately 4.47 million acres of trees, an area larger than the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. Whirlpool Corporation is the industry leader in energy and water efficiency, and the only appliance manufacturer that brings an “across the board” focus to energy and water conservation, from design to manufacturing and distribution to end of product lifecycle. In 2003, Whirlpool became the first appliance manufacturer to announce a global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target, with a goal of reducing emissions by 3 percent from 1998 levels by 2008, while at the same time increasing production by 40 percent. The company is on track to meet this target, and believes it has the responsibility to do more. With yesterday's announcement, Whirlpool Corporation is significantly increasing its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite having grown its manufacturing substantially both organically and with the 2006 acquisition of Maytag Corporation. Whirlpool Chairman and CEO Jeff Fettig announced the increased reductions plan in his keynote address at the Energy Efficiency Global Forum & Exposition (EE Global). The conference is the Alliance to Save Energy’s first ever global forum, bringing together leaders from the five regions of the world to forge new partnerships and develop strategies on energy efficiency in Washington, D.C. “Whirlpool is committed to environmentally sound business practices, and we are leading by example,” said Fettig. “But we also know that the greatest differences are achieved not on our own, but through cooperation and close collaboration with others. And that includes working with industry, policymakers and other stakeholders to create more choices and better solutions that benefit us all.” Whirlpool is the founding sponsor of EE Global, a showcase for the energy-efficiency industry attracting industry professionals, academics and policy makers from around the world, not only to exchange the latest technical, commercial and policy information, but to forge partnerships and develop “best practices,” policies and strategies for global implementation. Whirlpool Corporation is the world's leading manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances, with annual sales of approximately $18 billion, more than 73,000 employees, and more than 70 manufacturing and technology research centers around the world. The company markets Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Brastemp, Bauknecht and other major brand names to consumers in nearly every country around the world. Whirlpool Corporation Introduces “Green Home Collection” at Greenbuild International Conference and Expo

November 07, 2007

Gallery of 3-D Home Models Offered to Inspire Sustainable Design Ideas CHICAGO (McCormick Place West, Booth #798) (November 7, 2007) – Whirlpool Corporation is introducing the Green Home Collection during the 2007 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo November 6-9 in Chicago. The collection features 3-D models of sustainable homes drawn in Google(R) SketchUp(TM) by prominent architects and building designers. Located in the Google(R) 3D Warehouse Web site, the Green Home Collection is intended to promote creative ideas in sustainable home design. “Building a sustainable home starts with the design. We’re fortunate to partner with so many talented architects, designers and university students in developing this collection. By providing access to their home designs, we’re recognizing innovative thinking in sustainable technology and design,” said Mark Johnson, FAIA, CKD, architect and senior manager of architecture and design marketing at Whirlpool Corporation. The collection includes homes from Michelle Kaufmann Designs, including the mkLotus(TM) show home from the recent West Coast Green show and the “Elementhouse,” the University of Illinois solar-powered house that recently won two of the 10 Solar Decathlon 2007 contests. The Elementhouse is featured at Greenbuild, where attendees can view the virtual home at the Whirlpool Corporation booth, then visit the actual home. “The collection is an ongoing effort. We will continue to add 3-D home designs that demonstrate breakthrough ideas to benefit the residential construction market. We are also including several prototype homes from the recent Solar Decathlon in Washington DC, a solar home competition between university student teams, to bring attention to the next generation of architects and engineers as well,” said Johnson. The Green Home Collection is one in a series of projects from Whirlpool Corporation’s Digital Green™ Portfolio. “Each element in the Digital Green Portfolio offers architects the tools they need to improve their design process, save time and specify ENERGY STAR(R) and other energy- and water-efficient products to achieve sustainable results,” added Johnson. Google SketchUp is a powerful, yet easy-to-learn, software developed to provide quick and easy 3-D forms for conceptual stages of design. The Google 3D Warehouse is a repository of 3-D building objects that expedites the design process. Throughout the Greenbuild show, Whirlpool Corporation and SketchUp experts from the company, School, will offer tutorials and presentations at Whirlpool Corporation’s booth on using SketchUp for designing sustainable homes. Video tutorials for designing homes in SketchUp and incorporating 3D appliance models from the Google 3D Warehouse can also be found in episodes 20-24 of the SketchUp Show, produced by School, available at go-2-school.com or via Apple iTunes. Whirlpool Corporation also offers ENERGY STAR qualified and other water- and energy-saving appliance models within the Google 3D Warehouse, providing designers and their clients the ability to visualize their designs in 3-D and determine the configurations that will work best. SketchUp models can then be converted into all major CAD products without having to draw designs twice. When using Google SketchUp, the kitchen design can even be experienced as a “virtual walk through.” Free and professional versions of Google Sketchup 3D design software are available at sketchup.com. To view the Green Home Collection 3-D models, please visit sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse, then enter “Green Home Collection.” Whirlpool Corporation manufactures more ENERGY STAR qualified home appliances than any other appliance manufacturer. The company’s dedication to energy efficiency has earned it the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence 2007 Award from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, making it the eighth time the company has been honored with an ENERGY STAR Award win. Whirlpool Corporation is the world’s leading manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances, with annual sales of approximately $18 billion, more than 73,000 employees, and more than 70 manufacturing and technology research centers around the world. The company markets Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Maytag, Whirlpool, Amana, Gladiator and other major brand names to consumers in nearly every country around the world. WorkSafeBC Congratulates Companies Advancing Safety in Construction

November 02, 2007

RICHMOND, BC – November 2, 2007: Three B.C. construction companies have been recognized for their safety innovations as part of the 19th annual Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) Awards of Excellence ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver. “WorkSafeBC is proud to sponsor the safety innovation award and acknowledge all those who have made a difference and helped make construction workplaces safer,” said Vincent Russell, WorkSafeBC’s Director of Industry and Labour Services. Russell presented Precision Gutters Ltd. of Surrey with the gold award for designing the Basemate Ladder Leveler, which gives workers better ladder stability while working on uneven surfaces while installing gutters to commercial and residential projects and providing maintenance to building exteriors. The ladder leveler has proven to be cost effective saving the operator set-up time while creating a more stable platform on any ground surface. The ITC Group of Companies & Ident Software Ltd. in Vancouver won a silver award for their hazard identification software program; this program codes hazards on a plan for each floor of a building under construction. The program reduces the number of places that data about a hazard is recorded, decreasing repetition of input and potential transcription errors. It also allows for the historical and statistical review of any problems in safety. Flynn Canada Ltd. of Surrey also won a silver award for its Beam Guard System that provides a safe and effective fall protection system for metal deck installers that helps eliminate swinging as a fall hazard and lifelines from being cut. The VRCA Awards of Excellence celebrate and acknowledge excellence in construction in award categories such as general, electrical and trade contracting as well as safety innovation. Serving 2.2 million workers and about 190,000 employers, WorkSafeBC is a provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors and funded by employers. WorkSafeBC was born out of a compromise between BC's workers and employers in 1917 where workers gave up the right to sue their employers or fellow workers for injuries on the job in return for a no-fault insurance program fully paid for by employers. WorkSafeBC is committed to a safe and healthy workplace and to providing return-to-work rehabilitation and legislated compensation benefits to workers injured as a result of their employment.
