Severe Weather and Walls/Roofs:
The case for using advanced roof systems in hurricane zones

Several major hurricanes have provided proof to the capability of spray polyurethane foam (SPF) to withstand major weather catastrophes. As a result, there has been an increase in performance testing and materials studies on SPF by industry experts in order to make roofing and envelope systems that better protect buildings and their occupants during storms and high-wind events. Learn more on how to protect your investment in this significant review of the latest data on SPF.

While your mind is trained to envision thousands of square feet in unison, focus it for a moment on a more microscopic level; a single square foot. Approximate numbers lead one to a simple math. That for every square foot of floor space you design there are multiples of that in wall space your reputation hangs upon. The constant threat to your design is moisture. A natural attribute of a living, breathing and functioning building.

While some architects take up the sword and fight at managing moisture, others have decided on a more sensible approach. They’re forgiving moisture, thanks to Georgia-Pacific fiberglass mat technology. The Dens™ family of gypsum products compensates for moisture in your exterior sheathing, interior walls, shafts, tile and even roof assemblies. That means with the stroke of your specifying pen you reduce risks in a cascading fashion. For building owners, risks are reduced in possible mold remediation. For GC’s, they can allow Dens products to be exposed to the elements during construction. They can also hang interior walls before drying-in in the name of efficiency. For you, risks are reduced,  because you specified a proven leader with an enviable track record in all types of buildings around the world instead of pinning your reputation on an unproven newcomer. Now, take that square foot, add the benefits mentioned and multiply them out. That’s Dens solutions. Only from Georgia-Pacific.

SMART VENT Certified Automatic Foundation Flood Vents

Each 16” x 8” SMART VENT is certified to provide 200 sq/ft of flood protection for an enclosed area. SMART VENT products are code compliant, FEMA accepted, and ICC-ES Evaluated. We have various models of vents including dual-function (flood protection + air ventilation), insulated, wood wall, overhead door, combination/industrial models as well as Pour-in-Place Buck systems and accessories including interior sleeve & trim kits, UL-certified fire dampers, rain shields, etc.

SMART VENT preserves the aesthetic beauty of a home by requiring 2/3 less vents.

Annual NFIP Flood insurance premiums are greatly impacted by flood venting placement and size. Our trained technical staff of Certified Floodplain Managers will review your foundation design for optimum vent placement. This could save the homeowner a significant amount of money per year in flood insurance premiums.

The all stainless steel construction meets or exceeds flood and corrosion resistance code requirements. The SMART VENT door is latched closed until flood water enters. Flood water lifts the internal floats which unlatches and rotates the door open inside the frame. This allows the flood water to automatically enter and exit through the frame opening, relieving the pressure from the foundation walls. The louvers are not relied on to let the water in and out. They are for ventilation only. Regardless of the louvers’ position, opened or closed, when flood water flows into the door, the internal floats release the door to rotate open to relieve the hydrostatic pressure. The louvers and pest screen are rotated out of the path of the flood water. No electricity is required.

SMART VENT Foundation Flood Vents, was voted winner of the prestigious ‘Most Innovative Product Award’ by attendees of the World of Concrete Show, ‘Top 100 Products Honors’ and MVP Award from Building Products magazine, and a recently featured product on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
