GacoFireStop 5500 - First Open Cell Foam for Attics and Crawl Spaces - Approved without an Additional Ignition Barrier

March 22, 2011

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Gaco Western fuses high performance open-cell spray foam insulation with Ignition Barrier in a new single application formula. It’s the first and only open-cell single application formula of its kind in the industry. Now with GacoFireStop™ spray foam insulation, a one-step installation has never been easier or yielded greater results. On February 3, 2011, GacoFireStop passed the ICC-ES AC 377 Appendix X test for spray foam insulation, a first for open-cell foams. Until this point, an additional ignition barrier was required by all Spray Foam Manufacturers for open-cell insulation in attic and crawl space applications. “The difference is: GacoFireStop doesn’t require any additional ignition barrier. It’s part of the actual polyurethane foam insulation,” said Davis. “So it’s easier for code officials to inspect – and pass. Contractors and builders won’t have to prove a required thickness of intumescent coating over the top of the foam.” GacoFireStop provides significant cost savings over competitive open-cell foam products with ignition barrier coating. The single-step process also means significantly reduced installation time: a key savings factor for the installer, builder and – ultimately – the homeowner.

CPSC and HUD Issue Updated Remediation Protocol for Homes With Problem Drywall

March 21, 2011

WASHINGTON, March 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are issuing an updated remediation protocol (pdf) for homes with problem drywall. A study (pdf) conducted on behalf of CPSC by Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, finds no evidence of a safety hazard to home electrical systems. Sandia simulated long-term exposure of wiring and other electrical components to hydrogen sulfide gas, which is associated with problem drywall. Based on this study, CPSC and HUD staff, representing the Interagency Task Force on Problem Drywall, are no longer recommending the removal of all electrical wiring in homes with problem drywall. This change in the government's protocol may reduce the cost of remediation for many homes. After simulating more than 40 years of corrosive conditions that could exist in problem drywall homes, Sandia staff did not observe any acute or long-term electrical safety events, such as smoking or fire. Corrosion and blackening of the exposed electrical components did occur and was observed to be consistent with the characteristic corrosion reported to CPSC by thousands of consumers. Based on this study, it is the belief of the staffs of CPSC, HUD and Sandia that long-term exposure of wiring and other electrical components to hydrogen sulfide gases does not indicate a safety hazard to a home's electrical systems.

Heavy Rain, Melting Snow and Flood Warnings Galore Make Perfect Conditions for Dangerous Indoor Mold

March 18, 2011

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After the rain subsides, snow melts and flood waters recede, water-logged residents throughout the U.S. may face a lingering and unwanted visitor: indoor mold. Not only can mold cause thousands of dollars of damage to a home, it can also be a serious health hazard. Traditional mold-fighting solutions, like bleach, have limited effectiveness against mold and also emit harmful chemicals into the air. 1. Detect It – Where there’s a mold issue there’s a water issue. To eliminate and prevent mold you need to stop water from infiltrating your home. Determine the source of the water ingress that is causing the mold – like leaking roofs, cracked foundations, clogged drains or faulty plumbing – and fix the problem. 2. Dry It – If there is too much water to sweep out of your home, consider a shop vacuum or invest in a water pump (or rent one at your local hardware store) to remove water-filled areas. Once the water is removed, use fans to circulate and absorb moisture in the air. If weather permits, open all doors and windows; indoor mold spore counts are typically higher than outdoor counts. Open closet and cabinet doors to allow air to circulate through all these areas. 3. Ditch It - Throw out water-logged and mold-infested materials that are replaceable, such as carpeting or ceiling tiles. The general rule is: if in doubt, throw it out. If drywall has absorbed water, the drywall should be cut out 12 inches above the water level and replaced once the room is dried out. 4. Deactivate It - Use an EPA-registered, non-toxic solution like Concrobium Mold Control® to fight remaining indoor mold. This innovative “2-in-1” solution both eliminates mold and prevents it from coming back, and it contains no bleach or other harmful chemicals. It’s important to treat hidden areas in a home such as crawlspaces, closets and under furniture to be sure they remain mold-free. Concrobium is available at home improvement retailers including Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menards, as well as local hardware and grocery stores. Special fogger units, which mist Concrobium Mold Control into the air to treat large or inaccessible spaces such as basements and attics, are available for rent at The Home Depot Tool Rental department. 5. Dehumidify It - Run a dehumidifier to take additional moisture out of the air. Maintain indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent and monitor humidity levels with a hygrometer, an inexpensive device found at many hardware stores.

March 03, 2011

Hottest living and garden features include lighting, fire pits and low maintenance landscapes WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Homeowners want function, efficiency and fire pits in their outdoor space, according to the 2011 American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Residential Trends Survey. The survey asked residential landscape architecture professionals to rate the expected popularity of dozens of different outdoor living and landscape features for this year. For 2011, the top outdoor living features are some of the most basic: light, fire, food and a place to sit and enjoy it all. Overall, 96.2 percent of respondents rated exterior lighting as somewhat or very popular for this year, followed by fire pits/fireplaces (94.2 percent), seating/dining areas (94.1 percent), grills (93.8 percent) and installed seating like benches or seat walls (89.5 percent). While the most popular outdoor features reflect an enduring sensibility, the interest in modern technology like stereo systems (58.3 percent), Internet access (46.3 percent) and televisions (45.4 percent) adds to the growing trend of taking what we enjoy inside to the outdoors – up to a point. Only 10.4 percent of respondents thought outdoor sleeping areas would be popular this year. When it comes to landscape elements, efficiency and sustainability reign supreme. The most popular for 2011 include low maintenance landscapes (94.2 percent), native plants (87.2), water-efficient irrigation (83.1 percent), ornamental water features (81 percent) and food/vegetable gardens (80.3 percent).
