Church Expansion Project Combines Unconventional Aesthetic Design with High-Performance Building Envelope Components

August 24, 2018

LEWISVILLE, Texas, August 23, 2018 – A longtime staple of the Bloomington, Ill., community, Vale Church has seen its congregation increase by more than a third in recent years. Their response, in addition to boosting staff, was to purchase 37 acres of land for a brand-new facility — designed from the ground up to be a physical representation of the church's modern philosophy and sense of community.

Construction for the new facility began in August 2017, with an aggressive timetable that targeted building enclosure by the end of the calendar year. Considering the fast-track construction schedule and a tight budget, BLDD Architects targeted multiple pre-engineered metal building frames from Star Building Systems as the basis for design.

"Our number one goal was to not look like a typical metal building," reported Project Architect Brian Sommerfeld, BLDD, who designed the church's exterior façade and also handled construction administration throughout the building process. Vale Church's high-performance building envelope features more than 18,000 square feet of Metl-Span 3-inch CF Striated insulated metal panels in 24/26 gauge.

Metl-Span insulated metal panels offer exceptional thermal performance in a single-component wall system. While traditional wall assemblies require multiple components and installation steps, insulated metal panels formed a weathertight barrier from the elements after just one pass from the installation team at P.J. Hoerr. Combining a steel face and liner and closed-cell foam insulation, Metl-Span CF insulated metal panels are strong but lightweight, weighing considerably less than comparable precast, brick or glass building materials. The manageable weight reduces structural support requirements and also helps to deliver "quick and easy installation," according to Sommerfeld.

"Another one of our goals was to have the building weathertight by the end of 2017 to move to interior work," Sommerfeld added. "How quickly the insulated metal panels went up was a huge factor. Flashing in the panels together was very simple, as well." Metl-Span insulated metal panels are available in a variety of profiles with thicknesses up to 4", offering a maximum R-value of 32.57 to meet even the most daunting environmental conditions. Sommerfeld specified the product in three distinct panel widths "to align the integrated windows with panel joints."

Vale Church utilizes warm red and orange hues for their logo and web properties. While relying predominantly on Polar White and Slate Gray panel colors, the new facility features nearly 2,000 square feet of CF Striated insulated metal panels in a striking shade of Copper Metallic to capture the church's warm atmosphere.

Sommerfeld accented the vertical insulated metal panel aesthetic with MBCI’s Designer Series Flat concealed fastener panels on the wing walls and main entrance. The single skin metal rainscreen panels features the same Copper Metallic finish in a horizontal orientation. "Overall, the building is very vertical," he says. "We incorporated the single skin panels as a way to add some variation to the aesthetic with a horizontal element."

Metl-Span panels also served as the basis for the project's roofing system. Vale Church features more than 30,000 square feet of Insulated BattenLok metal roof panels in matching Regal Gray. The composite roof panel design combines durable interior and exterior metal faces with Metl-Span’s unmatched polyurethane core.

Just like their wall counterparts, Insulated BattenLok roof panels are offered in a variety of widths, lengths and thicknesses to meet unique project parameters. The panels feature two-inch high standing seams for long, dynamic sightlines, along with the lightly corrugated Mesa exterior face between the seams.

The new Vale Church opened its doors to the public June 1. All told, the project incorporates approximately 50,000 square feet of metal panels by Metl-Span, Star Building Systems and MBCI — showcasing the best in design and performance from industry-leader NCI Building Systems Inc. The end result is an ultra-modern, aesthetically pleasing facility for the church's growing congregation.

Brewery Combines Cold Storage, Restaurant And Production Facilities

August 09, 2018

LEWISVILLE, Texas, August 9, 2018 – Alpha Brewing Company recently took its business to the next level with a new, expanded headquarters in St. Louis that features a high-performance insulated metal panel façade by Metl-Span. At more than 13,000 square feet, the all-inclusive facility combines a taproom and restaurant with seating for approximately 300 patrons and the manufacturing capability to produce 3,000 barrels of beer annually.

Founded in 2013, the company employs a refreshing, modern take on the ancient art of beer brewing — offering its loyal customer base of “sipsters” an interactive Mug Club membership package, rare and limited brews and fast-casual Latin fare at the facility’s new kitchen, Alphateria. Alpha Brewing Company even offers live entertainment from area musicians twice a week in the tasting room and patio locales.

“It’s a full-service venue,” says Joe Davidson, lead architect, Dadoworks Architecture + Design of St. Louis. “There’s both a production brewery and a tasting room component. These are separate facilities joined through a courtyard.”

With a significant investment of $2 million, the owners of Alpha Brewing Company explored multiple cladding options to find the right material to suit their particular needs, which combined cold storage elements with a modern, all-weather building envelope. Veteran insulated metal panel specifiers, Dadoworks weighed the cladding options with their client.

“The owner initially wanted to clad the building with a single-skin element and then we were looking at a masonry envelope,” said Davidson. “The alternate cladding methods didn’t provide the insulation value we needed for the wall system or an interior and exterior finish in one swoop. These were important factors for us.”

Dadoworks specified 3,000 square feet of Metl-Span 4-inch CF42 Light Mesa insulated metal panels for the facility’s walk-in coolers. An additional 3,000 square feet of Metl-Span insulated metal panels in the 2-inch thickness were implemented as the brewery’s exterior cladding. The design team relied on two shades of white, Polar White and Igloo White, in a siliconized polyester coating for a clean exterior and interior aesthetic.

“The 2-inch panels were used for exterior walls and the 4-inch panels were used on the interior of the buildings for walk-in cooler walls and ceilings,” explained installer Brad Langeneckert, president of Langeneckert Homes, Valley Park, Mo.

Metl-Span panels achieve high R-values in a lightweight system with minimal thickness as compared to other insulation methods. Ideal for both cold storage or commercial industrial applications, the 4-inch CF Light Mesa profile offers an exceptional R-value of 30.86. With factory foamed-in-place thermal insulation and thermal breaks between panel face and liner, the product keeps internal temperatures cool regardless of external conditions.

Metl-Span insulated metal panels also offer a simple and easy installation process, thanks to the product’s single-component construction. Insulated metal panels minimize construction coordination and provide faster close-in for interior trades. While Alpha Brewing opened the doors to its new location in March 2018, the insulated metal panel building envelope was fully installed by the prior November after approximately seven months of construction.

Builder Langeneckert Homes handled the installation process from day one.

Davidson was drawn to an insulated metal panel façade because of the unique, single-source responsibility offered by Metl-Span. Relying on just one material provider helped to keep the Alpha Brewing project on time and budget. “That kind of coordination can lead to time, energy and cost savings throughout the construction project,” Davidson said.

South Carolina YMCA features curved standing seam roof by McElroy Metal

August 08, 2018

BOSSIER CITY, La., August 8, 2018 – One majestic wave tops the new Clover School District YMCA natatorium. The standing seam metal roof from McElroy Metal achieved the aesthetic the community was looking for and the architect delivered.

The 71,400-square-foot facility is part of a 2014 bond referendum in the Clover School District. The aquatic and fitness center features two indoor 25-yard pools, a gymnasium, fitness room, dedicated exercise space for group classes, racquetball courts and a walking track. The outdoor 50-meter pool features an adjoining water park with slides and play equipment for all ages.

The large natatorium roof has a radius that allowed the preformed panels to lay down without site curving. The ticket booths and outdoor locker room facilities required factory formed panels that had to be curved in the field because of a tighter radius. This required strong coordination and color match of the metal roof to the aluminum composite fascia and soffit material to tie everything together aesthetically.

Achelpohl Roofing of Prosperity, S.C., installed a total of 21,000 square feet of 24-gauge Maxima 216. The panels for the natatorium roof were manufactured at the McElroy plant. The panels for the ticket booth and locker room were formed and curved onsite. The color was Premium Silver Metallic.

“We were actively onsite for about six months,” says Amanda Achelpohl Childs of Achelpohl Roofing & Sheet Metal of Prosperity, S.C. “We did the insulated and composite walls as well.

“We had about 10 people on the roof to handle the 111-foot panels coming off the roll former. The installation of the long panels went pretty quick because we had to have so many people there to help run them out, so we installed at the same time.”

The main entrance, with Premium Silver Metallic fascia and soffits to match the metal roofing, is highlighted by green screening above the entrance. Visitors have said it resembles the look of a flying saucer. McElroy Metal supplied 60 sheets of 24-gauge flat sheet for the formed trim, including fascia and soffits. The color was also Premium Silver Metallic.
