March 30, 2009

NEW YORK, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Bernard Amadei, founder of Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB-USA), last night received the 2008 Award of Excellence from ENR (Engineering News Record), the magazine's highest honor. ENR is a publication of The McGraw-Hill Cos., New York City. For the past 44 years, the editors of ENR annually have selected a group of top newsmakers who have served the best interests of the engineering and construction industry. Last night, Amadei was recognized by ENR as "... an academic who is giving engineering education a new twist, founding a movement catching on with students, professionals and global communities." Amadei will be the subject of a cover story in ENR's March 30 issue. "It is a great honor for me to receive the 2008 award of excellence from ENR," said Amadei. "This award is meant to be shared by the staff and board of EWB-USA and the 12,000 engineering volunteers (students and professionals) who have the vision to making the world a better place. I am pleased to receive this award on their behalf. "The engineering profession is called to play a critical role in contributing to peace and security in an increasingly challenged world," he added. "Helping 5 billion of the people at the bottom of the pyramid with the basic necessities of livelihood -- water, sanitation, shelter, security, energy, education, health, etc. -- is no longer an option for the engineering profession. It is an obligation," Amadei said.
