Atlanta's First LEED-Platinum Building on Tour

September 03, 2009

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Edgewood Offices, the first building in the City of Atlanta to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum Certification will open its doors to the public this fall. Occupying the building, located on Edgewood Avenue in the historic Martin Luther King district, is The Epsten Group, an architecture and high-performance building consulting firm, and Dynamic Dish, a vegetarian eatery. "We are excited to show off the sustainable features of the Edgewood Offices," says Dagmar Epsten, principal of The Epsten Group, which acted as architect, LEED specialist, and general contractor for the project. "When the Edgewood Offices achieved LEED Platinum certification two years ago it was unheard of in Atlanta. Now more people and organizations are getting on board with LEED, and aiming for higher levels, including Platinum." Visitors will see a rainwater harvesting cistern, a green roof, renewable and salvaged finish materials and energy-saving techniques. The 2,000 square feet building also demonstrates how much can be achieved by renovating and adding onto a small, historic building. Visitors will also get a peek at The Epsten Group's new project, The Edge, down the street from its current office. Last month, after two months of renovations, the firm expanded and partially occupied the former Keen Edge building. This adaptive re-use project is expected to be completed next year, with The Epsten Group occupying the entire building. This new office will pursue LEED Platinum Certification under the new LEED 2009 standards. Leading the tour will be members of The Epsten Group, with the first tour exclusively available for members of Atlanta's American Institute of Architects' (AIA), through their Committee On The Environment (COTE), on September 11. Future tours will be open to the public through the Marcel Breuer event later this fall which honors the contributions of Marcel Breuer, regarded as the inventor of tubular style furniture and a leading designer of the 20th century. More information on those tours can be found at www.aiaatlanta.org/breuer.
