The days are getting cooler and the brunt of winter is just around the corner. This is the time when adult stinkbugs (technically known as the brown marmorated stinkbug) search refuge in homes to find a cozy place to overwinter. And as temperatures drop, these slow-moving bugs seek warmer temperatures, often moving down from attics and into our living areas. Fortunately, Moyer Indoor|Outdoor® has discovered an innovative method of capturing stinkbugs in attics before they begin creeping downstairs on walls, around windows, tucked among folds in curtains or sitting on bed pillows. Within the past two years, Moyer has leased and installed over 50 UV light traps that measure 30” long and 12” high in homeowners’ attics and crawl spaces. Flying insects like stinkbugs actively search out UV rays and are drawn to the light, mistaking it for the sun’s rays. Once drawn, the pests stick to the light and are trapped. Bob Williamson, Moyer’s general manager, advises, “It’s critical to start treatments early in the season. We offer an exterior treatment that can be applied to repel stinkbugs from entering your house before cold weather hits, and our UV light traps help catch any that are able to find a way into your home.” Another tip is to winterize your home as best as possible. Seal cracks around windows and doors, and caulk around areas where pipes come into the home. Since it’s impossible to completely seal up a house, these preventative measures may not be effective enough. This is when a UV light trap is often your best defense against stinkbugs.
