Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design marks important environmental milestone PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Chester County Commissioner Terence Farrell and Chair of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council Joseph Healy joined PECO President and CEO Denis O’Brien yesterday in celebrating the recent awarding of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification to five of the company’s existing buildings. The event was held at PECO’s Berwyn Campus, which includes three of the five existing buildings that received certification. PECO’s other two LEED certified existing buildings are located in Phoenixville and Warminster, PA. The work completed to achieve certification at the five sites included lighting, HVAC and plumbing upgrades, the implementation of a green cleaning program, the creation of a Green Champion employee volunteer group, and increased recycling. These efforts helped reduce annual energy use by nearly 3.5 million kWh (kilowatt hours) - the equivalent to the energy used every year by approximately 500 homes – and decreased annual water consumption by 701,000 gallons across the five buildings. In addition, PECO also converted nearly 20 acres of turf grass to native meadows at both Berwyn and Warminster to promote a healthier ecosystem and reduce emissions resulting from lawn maintenance.
