  • Underground enclosures provide safety for pedestrians and vehicles and easy access for maintenance and repair. This course presents an overview of underground enclosures for non-deliberate traffic areas, including selection considerations, load ratings, placement, and installation, with a discussion of the ANSI/SCTE 77 performance standard.

  • Expansion or modification of electrical cabling is rarely considered yet occurs during the lifetime of most buildings. Expansion of in-wall cabling requires additional work, trades, and possibly electrical service interruption, but cable tray facilitates removal and addition of cabling. This course reviews two types of cable tray—ladder tray and wire mesh tray—their components, characteristics, and applications and code-related installation information.

  • Ground improvement refers to the application of geotechnical construction techniques to improve the performance of soils. These techniques are used when existing soils cannot provide satisfactory support of the planned structure. They improve the ground performance by increasing the strength and stiffness of the soil mass through densification, reinforcement, and/or cementing of soils. This course introduces ground improvement technologies and provides an in-depth review of aggregate piers and their design, installation, and benefits.

  • The need to evaluate thermal bridging in a building’s design and performance has become more prevalent because of the increasing requirements for more energy-efficient buildings. This course provides an introduction to thermal bridging, energy code requirements, and the use of thermal break solutions designed to improve energy efficiency in the building envelope.

  • A rooftop solar photovoltaic system offers myriad benefits to both building owners and the environment; to maximize the benefits, however, it is important to be aware of the potential causes and effects of problems with rooftop installations. This course presents the issues to consider to prevent damaging the roof, voiding the roofing warranty, and incurring additional costs. Solar system mounting options are explored in terms of how they can help eliminate concerns around rooftop installations.
