The trend toward greater resilience in roof design has come into sharp focus in recent years. The forces driving this trend include the decline in skilled labor among roofing contractors and allied trades; changes in the building code that have been influenced by severe weather patterns; and the increasing application of sustainable and “green" technologies. The urgency of this trend has challenged both design and construction professionals to find both human and technological solutions in a dynamic work environment. This presentation will explore how the trend toward greater roof resilience has affected the application and performance of roofing systems over time. It will also discuss ways to meet the changing demands.

Roofing technologies have come a long way from labor-intensive systems that achieved water tightness through redundancy. Today’s single-ply thermoplastic membrane systems are lightweight, consistently manufactured, and efficient to install. This course focuses on thermoplastic single-plies, particularly those that are PVC based, and explores their benefits and limitations. It also identifies the important factors to consider when selecting a roof system, including fastening techniques, warranties, safety, and sustainability.

In basic roofing design vapor retarders and air barriers play a crucial role in reducing air leakage and enhancing roof system performance. However, their benefits extend beyond simple air sealing. This course explores the impact of new innovative technology: permeable vapor retarders and air barriers on moisture management, energy efficiency, and wind uplift resistance in low-slope roofing assemblies. Attendees will gain insights into moisture infiltration, air movement, and the risks associated with condensation buildup, material degradation, and loss of R-value in the roofing assembly. The presentation will cover strategies for proper design and placement of a permeable vapor retarder to mitigate condensation buildup and premature roof failures. Recent research findings will highlight how advanced moisture control solutions, such as permeable vapor retarders, enhance long-term roof resiliency and durability, lowering total cost of ownership.

Low permeance vapor barriers, once thought to improve performance, may in fact increase interior condensation and trap moisture within the wall assembly. Due to the problems with impermeable water-resistive barrier (WRB) installation many architects are now incorporating highly vapor open WRB systems in their designs. But many still believe too much permeability is bad for a wall assembly. Studies show that highly permeable WRB systems increase substrate drying, reduce the wet time of absorptive claddings allowing permeable WRB membranes to enhance the wall assembly performance. This presentation investigates the current research on vapor open systems and discusses how more permeability enhances wall assembly performance.
