The Solar Roof-Plus-Storage Ecosystem

Residential solar power generates clean energy, reduces carbon footprint, protects against rising electricity rates, and protects property from outages, but it is only effective during daylight hours. Adding battery storage to a solar system—called solar plus storage—removes this limitation and moves a home closer to energy independence. In this course, we will review the components of a solar-plus-storage system, including selection considerations for residential rooftop solar and DC-coupled solar batteries. The course also reviews the extended system of monitoring and DC charging....

Radon Abatement: Controlling Radon Gas in Residential Construction

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas, a Class A carcinogen, the leading cause of cancer after smoking, and the leading cause of death for nonsmokers. It is found in soil, rock, and groundwater. If radon enters a home through slabs, basements, and crawl spaces, breathing it can lead to illness or even death. This course examines how the gas travels through soil and into structures and the various interception approaches and materials that can be utilized to prevent entry into inhabited spaces. It also highlights building code requirements and language that can assist with ensuring the correct radon interception systems are designed and installed effectively....

Are Highly Permeable Membranes Too Permeable?

Studies show highly permeable water-resistant air barrier (WRB/AB) systems increase substrate drying and reduce the wet time of absorptive claddings, thereby improving wall assembly performance and lowering the risk of toxic growth substances. This presentation investigates the science of permeability, current research on vapor open building envelope systems, and discusses how increased permeability can enhance wall assembly performance. Low permeance vapor barriers, once thought to improve performance, are known to increase interior condensation by trapping moisture within the wall assembly. When moisture is trapped within the assembly, the effects on occupant health and safety can be “sickening.” Moisture induces mold growth, building damage, and in some cases even structural damage, increasing health risks and occupant safety. Today, more architects and designers are incorporating highly vapor open WRB/AB systems into their designs to combat this issue. This course offers building science information that challenges the notion that excessive permeability is detrimental to a wall assembly....
