Unlocking the Puzzle of Building Envelope Continuity

Today’s buildings continue to push the envelope of architectural design, energy efficiency, construction timelines and cost reductions forcing building materials and application techniques to evolve. The evolution of products and applications to waterproof the entire building envelope (vertical and horizontal) throughout various construction materials has created a blend between established and newly developed waterproofing technologies. These blended technologies have the single purpose of integrating and creating a continuous system protecting the building from moisture and performing harmoniously. This presentation helps identify the challenges and opportunities to build an integrated waterproofing system addressing all six sides of the building envelope. While each type of installation will be reviewed separately, the platform will be set for successful integration at all of the transitions and changes within the building by the proper identification and specification of compatible products and materials....

Are Highly Permeable Membranes Too Permeable?

Studies show highly permeable water-resistant air barrier (WRB/AB) systems increase substrate drying and reduce the wet time of absorptive claddings, thereby improving wall assembly performance and lowering the risk of toxic growth substances. This presentation investigates the science of permeability, current research on vapor open building envelope systems, and discusses how increased permeability can enhance wall assembly performance. Low permeance vapor barriers, once thought to improve performance, are known to increase interior condensation by trapping moisture within the wall assembly. When moisture is trapped within the assembly, the effects on occupant health and safety can be “sickening.” Moisture induces mold growth, building damage, and in some cases even structural damage, increasing health risks and occupant safety. Today, more architects and designers are incorporating highly vapor open WRB/AB systems into their designs to combat this issue. This course offers building science information that challenges the notion that excessive permeability is detrimental to a wall assembly....

Understanding the Challenges of Mid-rise Construction

This presentation provides a comprehensive examination of the risks inherent in mid-rise construction and their direct impact on long-term building performance, safety, and occupant welfare. Participants will explore the shortcomings in current building codes that may allow for vulnerabilities and damages in these structures. The session will also address how natural movements within wood frame assemblies can compromise the integrity of the building envelope, creating pathways for moisture intrusion, structural stress, and premature material failure. In addition, the course will highlight the challenges of material compatibility at critical construction junctures—including parapets, balconies, roof-to-wall intersections, and transitions between dissimilar claddings—where failures frequently occur. Finally, attendees will gain insight into the external industry pressures, such as reduced budgets, accelerated schedules, and shifting market trends, that often undermine construction quality and limit the implementation of best practices. Through this exploration, architects, engineers, and construction professionals will gain strategies to recognize risk factors, improve design and detailing, and safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants."...
