Acetylated Wood: Durable, Stable, Sustainable Wood for Windows, Doors, & Siding

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Wood is both beautiful and practical but lacks long-term durability when used outdoors. Modified woods change the material properties of the wood at the molecular level to improve its weathering capabilities. This course discusses one type of modification: acetylation. We discuss the process, its impact on wood performance, the life cycle impact of acetylated wood, and how and where this type of wood can be used.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recall the process of wood acetylation, and compare and contrast the improvements to acetylated wood over other methods of preserving wood and other timbers.
  • Compare the durability, dimensional stability, coatings performance, and environmental benefits of acetylated wood compared to other treated timbers and species.
  • List and describe a wide range of external applications ideally suited to acetylated wood and review a number of interesting case studies.
  • Describe key environmental benefits of the life cycle assessment of acetylated wood over other building products.
  • Compare the carbon footprint of acetylated wood to other standard materials.
