Blended Cements for Reduced Carbon Footprint of Concrete

As efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of construction continue, building materials are under increasing pressure to have lower embodied energy and CO2. Modifying the concrete formulation by replacing ordinary portland cement with blended cement is a proven technology that can help to achieve this, but has not yet been embraced to its full potential. This session provides an introduction to ASTM C595 blended cements, including portland-limestone cements. PLCs have a long history of use throughout the world, but are only now starting to gain recognition in the U.S. The formulation and performance of PLCs and other blended cements will be explained to provide attendees with the knowledge they need to specify them with confidence for any type of construction application.
