Attaching Veneers Over Continuous Insulation

Attaching Veneers Over Continuous Insulation

The course describes the origins and reasons for the increasing use of continuous insulation in commercial exterior walls. Included is the air barrier, moisture barrier, and thermal insulation aspects of the wall system. This understanding is then combined with the design objectives of rain screen wall systems to outline the design issues that must be addressed in rain screen wall systems with continuous insulation. Several methods which can solve these design issues are presented. Attendees will understand how to design more energy efficient and robust rain screen wall assemblies.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • To understand the magnitude of air infiltration energy losses and methods to reduce those losses.
  • To understand various code and other requirements which a continuously insulated rains screen wall assembly must meet.
  • To understand how temperature profile design in wall assemblies in combination with water vapor permeance design can result in a far more robust wall system which can better resist condensation problems and have increased drying potential.
  • To understand the design issues surrounding rain screen wall assemblies, especially the veneer attachment methods as relating to maintaining the thermal performance of the wall system.
