Mass Timber Moisture Protection Strategies Through Construction and Occupancy

Mass Timber Moisture Protection Strategies Through Construction and Occupancy

As interest in mass timber building design grows, there are new protection strategies that must be employed for a successful installation to ensure occupant long-term health and safety. This presentation will explain moisture protection strategies by providing in-depth test results on mass timber wetting and drying studies, methods to protect during each construction phase, and the vapor-permeable protection technology available to address wood’s unique moisture characteristics. All in an effort to create a sustainable, stable structure and preserve the beauty of the mass timber building.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Review mass timber definitions
  • Understand mass timber’s unique sensitivity to moisture.
  • Understand how to mitigate moisture intrusion and its effects on occupants health and safety
  • Articulate moisture protection strategies for mass timber building construction phases
  • Discuss best practices for designing and installing mass timber protection from heat, air, and moisture flows
  • Explain how test results of vapor permeable protection outperform impermeable membranes
  • Review best practices for detailing mass timber to protect from moisture damage
