Synthetic (artificial) grass or turf has improved steadily since its first installation half a century ago, and it is now a sophisticated surfacing system that can be customized to suit specific purposes. This course reviews that development and then focuses on the specifics of synthetic grass suitable for use on playgrounds. This focus includes a detailed examination of its construction, installation, and maintenance, and a number of sample installations.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

• List the standard components of synthetic grass, and describe how each component contributes to aesthetics, fall safety and durability.
• Recall synthetic grass selection criteria and specify the correct type of synthetic grass to meet specific needs such as accessibility, comfort, resilience, flammability, and recyclability.
• Design and detail durable, code-compliant, safe, and aesthetically pleasing playground surfaces.
• Monitor synthetic grass installations to ensure they are expedited correctly to product long-lasting and low-maintenance installations.
