Hospitals strive to meet sustainability goals but must also maintain the highest standards in water safety to keep patients, visitors and staff safe. This session will explore best practices to reduce water usage while also deploying accepted protocols to reduce the risk of Legionella and other hospital acquired infections (HAIs). Examples of how sustainability metric tracking can complement water management Joint Commission and CMS requirements will be examined.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

• Learn how to keep patients, visitors, and staff safe by lowering water usage while also mitigating the risk of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens.
• Assess the risk HAIs expose to hospitals in terms of return on investment and patient satisfaction and how to utilize this information for sustainability best practices while keeping patients, visitors, and staff safe.
• Examine current regulations and mandates for water management plans aimed at keeping patients safe and explore how accepted sustainability goals and their associated metrics can play a role in the welfare of patients.
• Develop safe water conservation efforts that extend into other sustainability efforts including the reduction of plastic, paper, and battery usage that keep both patients and the planet safe and healthy.
