Typical Masonry Details and Specifications

With all of the different parts and pieces that go into a masonry wall assembly, this presentation will discuss best practices for typical masonry details and specifications. Specifically, common areas of conflict between drawings and specifications will be covered, as well as details that can add significant cost to projects. This presentation will discuss both single wythe concrete masonry unit (CMU) wall assemblies, as well as masonry cavity walls.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Attendees will be able to identify common areas of conflict between drawings and specifications as they relate to masonry walls. Knowing the correct specifications enable the architect to design the the highest performing project.
  • Attendees will understand the best practices when it comes to specifying concrete masonry units (CMUs) on projects in order to provide the best means of providing the best methods of moisture mitigation in the building.
  • Attendees will be able to identify the differences when specifying CMUs versus clay bricks for veneer applications to provide the safest environment for the building occupants.
  • Participants in the presentation will be able to understand common masonry details that can influence the cost of projects. Gaining this knowledge will provide attendees the ability to decide whether these details may or may not be required or appropriate.
