Battery Technologies in Life Safety Systems: Evaluating Today’s Options and the Path Forward
This course explores the evolving battery technologies used in lighting inverter systems, with a focus on comparing traditional VRLA batteries and other battery chemistries with modern Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) solutions. Participants will gain an understanding of how battery chemistry impacts safety, lifecycle cost, space requirements, and long-term performance in life-safety applications. The course also outlines why LiFePO₄ is emerging as a future-ready solution for next-generation emergency lighting systems.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
Identify and compare common battery technologies used in life safety and emergency inverter systems, including VRLA, Nickel-Cadmium, and various lithium chemistries, using key performance indicators such as cycle life, service life, operating temperature, energy density, and cost.
Evaluate the limitations and risks associated with legacy battery technologies in modern building environments, including maintenance requirements, thermal sensitivity, space constraints, and lifecycle cost implications.
Understand the technical and safety advantages of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) battery technology, including thermal stability, extended service life, reduced maintenance, and improved total cost of ownership.
Apply lifecycle-based decision-making principles to battery selection in life safety systems, enabling safer, more reliable, and future-ready design solutions that support occupant safety and long-term building performance.
