Designing the In-between: Canopies, Shade, and Screening in Commercial Architecture

Designing the In-between: Canopies, Shade, and Screening in Commercial Architecture

Designing a building entrance is important in creating people’s first impression of the property. This course will discuss effectively incorporating aesthetic elements such as canopies, covered walkways, branding, signage, and landscaping. In addition to adding visual improvements, it’s just as important to screen things that detract from the property’s aesthetics. Curb appeal and perceived value can be affected by all angles of a property. Quality screening systems help to hide utilities and other eyesores to improve the building’s overall appearance. This course offers an in-depth discussion of how to utilize various functional and decorative elements to create welcoming building entrances.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain how functional decorative elements such as canopies help to reduce the building’s energy costs, provide protection from the elements, and reduce the amount of slip and fall accidents.
  • Give the building a cohesive and recognizable brand identity with a combination of elements including canopies, signage, trellises, screening, and custom design features.
  • Compare open-top and roofed enclosures and understand the added benefits of dumpster roofs including preventing stormwater runoff pollution, additional security, and improved pest/nuisance control.
  • Assess regional weather requirements including fire risk, seismic, wind, and snow loads to choose the best screening options for your area.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered via webinar or face-to-face presentation. Available sessions shown below.
