Fundamentals of Green Roof Design and Waterproofing

This presentation will focus on the challenges to changing climate trends and the benefits of using green roofs of various types for adding environmental features and benefits including handling the rainfall that falls on a building. The presentation includes a discussion of how to properly waterproof the roof of a building to accommodate the various elements of the building’s insulation plus the components to create a successful green roof. The presentation discusses the different types of green roofs that can be developed on roof tops.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Understand the role of waterproofing as the critical foundation of any successful green roof system, including key elements required for a properly waterproofed roof deck.
  • Analyze the different types of green roof systems and how their design varies based on project goals, ranging from lightweight systems with limited vegetation to deeper assemblies supporting diverse plant life.
  • Evaluate the importance of growing media and how proper selection impacts plant health, water retention, and overall system performance.
  • Identify and understand essential green roof components, including drainage, containment, and vegetation layers, and how they function together within a complete system.
