Beyond the EPD: Designing Sustainable Buildings with Precast Concrete

Sustainability in construction is often measured through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), but these metrics capture only part of a building's overall performance. This course explores how precast concrete contributes to sustainable design through responsible material selection, manufacturing advancements, durability, resiliency, thermal performance, and life-cycle assessment considerations beyond A1-A3. Participants will examine how these factors influence occupant health, safety, welfare, and long-term building performance while evaluating current industry practices, emerging innovations, and real-world project applications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Define sustainability in the context of precast concrete construction, including core terminology, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), durability, and life-cycle stages A1–A3.
  • Describe the current state of sustainability within the precast concrete industry, including how practices, benchmarks, and performance expectations have evolved.
  • Evaluate whole-building sustainability strategies beyond EPDs, including life-cycle assessment considerations beyond A1–A3 and the role of precast systems in long-term building performance.
  • Identify emerging trends and innovations impacting sustainable precast concrete design, including anticipated changes in specifications, standards, and industry direction.
