Understanding LED Fixture Failure: Specifying for Long‑Term Expectations
Understanding LED Fixture Failure: Specifying for Long‑Term Expectations
This course examines LED fixture anatomy, key performance parameters, and how fixtures degrade and fail over time, affecting occupant safety, visual comfort, and long-term lighting quality. We will review performance parameters such as driver reliability, optical performance, material selection, and environmental conditions. Finally, we will see how these concepts translate into practical specification strategies to achieve more reliable, long-term outcomes.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
Describe how electrical, optical, and mechanical LED fixture failures — including overheating, loose hardware, melting lenses, and exposed wiring — create fire, electrical, and physical safety hazards in occupied buildings
Analyze how environmental conditions, material degradation, and inadequate maintenance accelerate lumen depreciation, increasing the risk of insufficient illuminance for older adults, people with low vision, and other occupants who depend on adequate light levels to navigate and perform tasks safely
Interpret LED performance testing documentation, including LM-79, LM-80, TM-21, and TM-35, to evaluate manufacturer data and identify fixtures that meet long-term safety, illuminance, and reliability requirements for occupied spaces
Apply color quality metrics, including TM-30 fidelity and gamut indices, to assess long-term color stability and specify fixtures that sustain design intent and occupant experience over the life of a project.
Approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. Delivered via webinar or face-to-face presentation. Available sessions shown below.
