Water as a Wellness System: Filtration Beyond the Kitchen Sink
Water as a Wellness System: Filtration Beyond the Kitchen Sink
Designers routinely specify wellness through air quality, daylighting, and low-VOC materials, yet drinking water is often left for homeowners to address after move-in. This session gives kitchen and bath professionals the knowledge to close that gap. Participants will learn how to evaluate drinking water contaminants and filtration certifications, compare common treatment solutions, and understand the design and installation considerations of five point-of-use delivery formats. The session also explores dispensers as an emerging residential category—helping designers plan convenient water access by lifestyle zone and incorporate rough-in requirements at the right stage of the project.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
Explain why drinking water belongs alongside air, light, and materials in a residential wellness strategy, and why daily interaction frequency gives it disproportionate weight.
Identify the contaminant categories undetectable by taste, smell, or appearance, and describe their exposure pathways in language that is accurate and defensible to a client.
Explain how palatability and access drive consumption and distinguish what filtration does from what adequate hydration does.
Differentiate NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401, and determine whether a product's certified claims support the wellness outcome a client is asking for.
Locate water access across lifestyle zones, select a delivery format, place a rough-in at the correct project phase, and evaluate value-engineering changes against the project's stated wellness goals.
