Solar roadway could revolutionize home power production

May 28, 2014

Imagine a road or driveway that also generates electricity from the sun. That’s the goal of the Solar Roadways project, a modular paving system of solar panels that can withstand the heaviest of trucks. The project has already received two phases of funding from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration for research and development of a paving system that will pay for itself over its lifespan. The inventors, Scott and Julie Brusaw, are seeking funding on Indiegogo to wrap up their Phase II contract for a prototype parking lot. They’re looking for funds to enter the production phase. The Solar Road Panels could be installed on any flat surface like roads, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, bike paths, playgrounds or any surface under the sun. The panels would pay for themselves primarily through the generation of electricity, which can power homes and businesses connected via driveways and parking lots. A nationwide system could produce more clean renewable energy than a country uses as a whole

JUAN MANUEL PALERM SALAZAR – BUILT LANDSCAPES

May 23, 2014

Appointment in Verona with a LECTIO MAGISTRALIS by the Spanish architect Banca Popolare di Verona Conference Room on Saturday 24 May 2014 at 10.00 Verona, May 2014 - On Saturday 24 May 2014 at 10.00 a.m., the Banca Popolare di Verona Conference Room in Via San Cosimo 10 will host the Lectio Magistralis by Spanish architect Juan Manuel Palerm Salazar with the title “Built Landscapes”. The event is part of the cycle of events involving international personalities titled "Landscape Saturdays" organised by the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservationists of the Province of Verona and is shared with Veronafiere in continuity with Marmomacc's own 'Lectio Magistralis' events, in collaboration with the Department of Art Museums and Monuments of Verona City Council. The work of Juan Manuel Palerm Salazar, partner since 1986 with Leopoldo Tabares de Nava in the "Palerm & Tabares de Nava Arquitectos" Studio, places special attention on aspects of the place and local area where architecture must reassess its relationship with the landscape amidst natural and urban elements as part of the language of architecture itself. The relationship between city-project and local area-landscape in the architecture of Palerm & Tabares de Nava consequently emerges as a duality seeking for equilibrium in the face of differences of scale and sites. The Lectio Magistralis will be opened by welcome speeches by Verona City Council, Veronafiere and Verona Order of Architects, and will be introduced by Alberto Vignolo, editor of "Architetti Verona" and presenter Anna Merci. The lecture will be followed by the presentation of the New Italian Blood Landscape Award 2013 for under-36 landscape architects.

SMA - Advanced Framing

May 20, 2014

Newport Beach, CA – Framing & Energy Efficiency Energy codes across the country are promoting the use of increased insulation in the walls of homes and businesses. Compliance becomes increasingly stringent – with each new edition of the energy codes, and building material producers must actively adjust to provide code-compliant products. The Stucco Manufacturers Association is at the forefront of these energy code changes. To build energy-efficient walls, a systems approach should be used. Traditionally, the focus is on the use of insulation between and outside the framing members, but the framing itself also has a large impact on the overall energy performance of a wall. New advanced framing techniques have been developed that improve the overall energy performance of the wall. Through the use of these techniques, traditional three coat without foam board may be used and still meet the new energy code requirements.

Kohler® Co. and Benjamin Moore Come Together to Inspire with Color and Design

May 13, 2014

Two home industry leaders collaborate to create comprehensive, livable color solutions KOHLER, Wis. — Feb. 3, 2014 — When it comes to color, Kohler Co. and Benjamin Moore know the impact it can have on enhancing a space—as well as the process homeowners undergo to pick the perfect palette. To aid homeowners and members of the trade through the selection process, designers from both companies collaborated to create Collaboration in Full Color, an array of inspiring tools and content that help customers visualize and choose their styles, and then empower them to create it by providing a list of materials to transform that vision into reality. These are the first three of a future series of creative environments, each including a kitchen and a bathroom, launched in this collaboration between Kohler Co. and Benjamin Moore: Southern Charm Inspired by the rich and distinctive architecture of historic southern town, this elegant design palette pulls together soft pinks, saturated blues, cloudy grays and shining details for a look that's worthy of any home. Eastern Mist Inspired by the swirling blend of misty colors that blur the lines of sea and sky on the eastern seaboard, this palette features the beautiful, pale shades of green and blue. Light woods and earthy tones add to the fresh and tranquil spirit of this palette. Northern Roots Even the well-worn, wind-beaten farmhouse has a uniquely wondrous beauty to it. Years of weathering reveal the varying hues of grays and taupes that inspired this palette of deep and complex neutrals, creating a beautifully mature feel. For the two industry pioneers with a combined 216-year history in cultivating color, this collaboration is a natural fit. "Color isn't only a part of our history, it's a part of our heritage dating back to 1927 when we were the very first to apply color to plumbing products," says Tristan Butterfield, Kohler's creative director. "Bold design with color happens a number of ways in the home—some bright and vibrant, others subtle and calming. Teaming up with fellow color leader Benjamin Moore will help us deliver livable color solutions to homeowners in innovative ways." Benjamin Moore's creative director Ellen O'Neill concurs: "Collaboration in Full Color will produce the kinds of inspiring, yet easy-to-use tools and color palettes that designers and consumers have come to expect from Benjamin Moore and Kohler." The content and tools created through this collaboration are available now online as well as in Kohler showrooms and select Benjamin Moore retailers across North America. Additionally, the color collaboration will be rolled out at trade shows, in-market events, and as featured content across several social media channels.

Changing the Landscape in SLC one Roof Deck at a Time

May 08, 2014

The Broadway Park Lofts are a victorious triumph in architectural achievement and urban residential development perseverance. These luxurious loft-style condominium units are refining urban lifestyle preferences and changing the landscape in Salt Lake City. According to the American Institute of Architects, 63% of architects cite outdoor living space as the most popular ‘special function room’ in housing construction, and Remodeling Magazine’s 2014 Cost-Vs.-Value Report includes multiple deck addition options in the ‘biggest gainers’ category. There is no doubt that outdoor living space is growing in demand in residential construction in both single family homes and multi-residential developments. Roof decks sometimes bring hesitancy to developers as there are so many considerations to constructing them properly. When any outdoor pedestrian surface is situated over living space, a reliable walkable, waterproof surface is critical. ClearWater Homes boldly and confidently set precedence for roof top decks in Salt Lake City with this project by utilizing the specialized roof deck waterproofing provided by Duradek vinyl membranes. Not only was Duradek a proven, reliable, warrantied solution for waterproofing the roof decks, but it also provided a low maintenance surface for the owners of the units sine Duradek vinyl does not require any maintenance to continue performing…just an occasional cleaning to maintain its aesthetic appeal.

The Deep Green Residence Hall at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, has earned LEED v2009 Platinum Certification and a score of 90 points, making the facility the highest-scoring, LEED-certified residence hall in the world. The LEED certification denotes independent verification from the U.S. Green Building Council that a building is designed and constructed "using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health." ROCKFON’s specialty metal ceiling systems improve TTC Islington Subway Station’s appearance

May 05, 2014

Chicago (March 2014)—As part of Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) renovation of Islington Subway Station, Rockfon® Planostile™ Snap-in specialty metal ceiling system met the requirements for performance, appearance, longevity and for ease of installation, which was managed by TTC’s own team. The master specification developed on Islington Station serves as the basis for all ceiling replacement needs in the TTC stations currently scheduled for renovation. After enduring for decades, Islington station’s ceiling system was ready for a fresh look. Another manufacturer’s linear metal ceiling had been installed during the early 1980s. “It was showing its age, was difficult to remove and re-install, and was difficult to keep clean,” said John Amaral, senior designer with TTC’s plant maintenance department/engineering. Ceiling specifications were driven by TTC’s engineering, construction and expansion department with priority to performance. Amaral also emphasizes that ease of installation and maintenance was critical, as TTC’s team at Islington would take on these responsibilities themselves.
