A summary of how the research and understanding of infections aerosol disease has significantly evolved over the past 5 years, an exploration into the different theories of control, the opportunity for localized ventilation/filtration system, the growing opportunities displacement ventilation and how all of these systems interplay with the architecture, medical planning and interior design of our clinical spaces.

This presentation would be a holistic overview of infection control in the context of outpatient ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs), understanding how patterns and workflows are influenced by the physical environment, and how the environment itself can help prevent the spread of infection. This takes into account how patients, equipment, and materials interact and would utilize root cause investigation data from Regent Surgical sites.

During the height of the pandemic, healthcare organizations and their design partners worked quickly to manage the crisis and adapt facilities to curb the spread of COVID-19. As we moved beyond the immediate crisis, many of these efforts evolved into broader strategies aimed at mitigating longstanding sources of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). The focus shifted from short-term emergency measures to long-term improvements in healthcare safety, resilience, and infection control, laying the groundwork for more effective responses to both future outbreaks and everyday clinical challenges. Many of these solutions quickly become standard best practices in the design of healthcare facilities, while others have quickly vanished from the discussion. In this session, we will highlight the key changes and review why certain solutions have been sidelined due to cost, feasibility, operations, and patient experience challenges. We will also review several innovative concepts that never made it off the drawing boards that may be worth resurrecting.
