For the past decade, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has been committed to serving the growing pediatric population through the planning and development of a transformative 70-acre campus with more than 3 million square feet of buildings. Opened in September 2024, Arthur M. Blank Hospital represents the crown jewel of the campus and is the largest pediatric hospital in Georgia. The hospital is also the first LEED v4/v4.1 Healthcare project in Georgia to achieve certification at any level and the largest LEED for Healthcare project in the United States. This session will explore how sustainability principles were integrated throughout the project, from early master planning through design and construction. Key strategies include carbon reduction, whole-building life-cycle assessment, and biophilic design, demonstrating how sustainability can be embedded into the planning and delivery of a complex, high-performance healthcare environment.

Healthcare organizations increasingly recognize that sustainability nurtures well-being and extends beyond reducing environmental impact. Healthcare Sustainability hinges upon supporting the health and well-being of patients, families, caregivers, and the communities they serve. This course explores Designing Wellness by demonstrating how People, Planet, and Performance function as inseparable components of sustainable healthcare design. Participants will learn how the benefits of wellness become the cornerstone for well-being, practical strategies that integrate wellness-centered planning, Lean operational principles, evidence-based design, and environmental stewardship to enhance well-being while advancing organizational and sustainability goals. By sharing our journey to Designing Wellness and using built healthcare examples and lessons learned from practice, attendees will gain a framework for placemaking that surpasses measuring environmental metrics and by strengthening the bonds to nurture People, Planet and Performance.

This presentation will explore resiliency and sustainability planning for hospitals and healthcare systems facing increasingly frequent climate- and weather-related disruptions. The discussion will examine broader resiliency considerations, including flood risk, emergency access, infrastructure planning, energy performance, and operational continuity during major environmental events. A client perspective could help anchor the conversation in real-world healthcare operational challenges and future preparedness considerations, drawing from firsthand experience navigating a significant weather-related event.
