This presentation will focus on the changing energy codes and how they affect commercial wall assemblies. The somewhat confusing concept of continuous insulation (CI)—and how it is used throughout the codes—will be discussed at length. The NFPA 285 fire test and its role in code-compliant wall assemblies will also be discussed for commercial building types I–4. There are many choices of insulation that can be used in commercial wall assemblies. We will discuss polyisocyanurate insulation; its thermal performance, physical properties, and compliance attributes; and how it compares with some of the other types available.
