Whirlpool Corporation Appointed to Consensus Committee for National Green Building Standard

May 17, 2007

Committee to Create a New, Uniform Green Building Standard for Residential Construction Practices BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (May 15, 2007) Whirlpool Corporation has been selected as the only appliance manufacturer of the Consensus Committee for the National Green Building Standard(TM). As part of the committee, Whirlpool Corporation will help transform the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Model Green Home Building Guidelines into a national green standard, certified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Omer Butch Gaudette, director of trade relations for Whirlpool Corporation, will represent the company on the Consensus Committee as a member of the Water Efficiency and Indoor Environmental Air Quality task group. Members were appointed by the NAHB Research Center Executive Standards Committee and include more than 40 representatives from a broad spectrum of the building industry, sustainability organizations and the public sector. NAHBs Model Green Home Building Guidelines are a set of voluntary guidelines that outline fundamental ways to build more environmentally appropriate and healthier homes. Earlier this year, NAHB announced that it would join forces with the International Codes Council (ICC) to take these guidelines through the ANSI process, and also promote a national green building standard designed to help combat the effects of greenhouse gases. Its a privilege for Whirlpool Corporation to serve on the Consensus Committee as it further helps Whirlpool and the building industry make a sustainable difference. And, Im honored to represent our company, said Gaudette. Whirlpool Corporation is the appliance industry leader in energy and waterefficiency and deeply ingrained in the building industry; therefore, implementing a national standard that preserves natural resources and improves the quality of life for us and future generations is truly a worthwhile endeavor. NAHB and the ICC plan to introduce the new green building standard at the International Builders Show in February 2008. For more than 30 years, Whirlpool Corporation has been committed to effectively utilizing and preserving natural resources. In 1970, Whirlpool Corporation created a corporate office for environmental control; and in 2003, the company became the worlds first appliance manufacturer to announce a greenhouse gas reduction strategy. The company manufactures more ENERGY STAR(R) qualified home appliances than any other appliance manufacturer. Additionally, Whirlpool Corporation received the ENERGY STAR(R) Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in both 2006 and 2007. The award was extended to Whirlpool Corporation for exhibiting outstanding environmental leadership year after year, while sustaining product and marketing excellence. This honor represents the companys eighth ENERGY STAR(R) Award in the nine years it has been awarded. Whirlpool Corporation is the worlds leading manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances, with annual sales of approximately $18 billion, more than 73,000 employees, and more than 70 manufacturing and technology research centers around the world. The company markets Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Gladiator, Brastemp, Bauknecht, and other major brand names to consumers in nearly every country around the world.
