As of April 22, EPA will require all contractors working in homes built before lead paint was banned in 1978 to be trained and certified under the Lead Paint: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule (LRRP). New Green Construction Code Unveiled

March 16, 2010

WASHINGTON, March 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Code Council today announced the release of Public Version 1.0 of the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) to regulate construction of new and existing commercial buildings. The IGCC aims to significantly reduce energy usage and greenhouse gasses. It addresses site development and land use, including preservation of natural and material resources. Enforcement of the code will improve indoor air quality and support the use of energy-efficient appliances, renewable energy systems, water resource conservation, rainwater collection and distribution systems, and the recovery of used water (graywater). The IGCC emphasizes building performance and building owner education to ensure the best energy-efficient practices. A key feature of the new code is a section devoted to "jurisdictional electives" that will allow customization of the code beyond its baseline provisions to address local priorities and conditions. The IGCC initiative was launched in 2009 with Cooperating Sponsors the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and ASTM International. The support of the AIA underscores its long-time leadership in the sustainability movement, including its 2030 Carbon Neutrality challenge, and its emphasis on the critical role of architects and designers in the life cycle of sustainable construction. The engagement of ASTM ensures the IGCC will make use of certain voluntary consensus standards recognized by industry, code officials, and other stakeholders for their high-degree of technical quality, relevance and their suitability to contribute to more sustainable and environmentally improved buildings. The green code initiative is now joined with a Standard developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Illuminating Engineers Society (IES), ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1-2009 for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings, Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, as an alternative jurisdictional compliance option within the IGCC. The IGCC also addresses residential construction by referencing the ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard developed by the National Association of Home Builders and the Code Council.

Price Pfister® Earns Consumers Digest Best Buy Rating for Petaluma™ Two-Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet

March 15, 2010

Recently Introduced Petaluma Showcases the Price Pfister 100 Year Heritage of Beautiful and High Quality Products LAKE FOREST, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Price Pfister®, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, announced today that its recently introduced Petaluma™ Two-Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet has earned the prestigious Best Buy rating in the kitchen faucet category from Consumers Digest. Faucet Best Buys were selected based on ease of use, quality of construction and variety of styles and finishes. Additionally, all Best Buy faucets have a lifetime warranty. The Petaluma by Price Pfister Best Buy rating was announced in an article published in the magazine’s March 2010 issue titled, “Making a Splash: Notable Kitchen Sinks and Faucets.” Consumers Digest editors noted: “The Petaluma stands out because of its pull-down spray head, which is an unusual feature in a two-handle kitchen faucet. This faucet doesn’t control the volume of the spray on the sprayhead, but it is $85 less than three-mode faucets, and we believe that that is a worthwhile trade-off. This model’s generous 15 ½-inch height makes this faucet a great value.” The Petaluma features a streamlined design with no deckplate for easy cleaning, allowing consumers to better display their upgraded countertops for added style. It has a ball joint sprayhead with a stream or spray option that allows flexible maneuvering for advanced kitchen functionality. This is an improvement over traditional two-handle high arc faucets with an optional sidespray, providing an opportunity for consumers to utilize the fourth sink hole for a matching soap or lotion dispenser. The Petaluma faucet also offers a 15 ½-inch total spout height for easy clearance with big pots, and boasts an extra long 75-inch braided vinyl hose with quick connect fittings and supply lines for fast and easy installation. Available in a stainless steel finish, the Petaluma Two-Handle Pull-Down Faucet is available at select home improvement stores throughout the U.S. Fixtures from Price Pfister come standard with ceramic disc valves and are covered by the Pforever Warranty®, which guarantees finish and function for the life of the product.

March 12, 2010

DALLAS, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Behringer Harvard announced today that Three Eldridge Place, a newly constructed 13-story office property in the portfolio of Behringer Harvard REIT I, Inc., has recently been awarded LEED® Core and Shell Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System(TM) is the national benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. The certification was based on a number of green design features that positively impact the property itself and the broader community. The use of recycled materials accounted for approximately 20 percent of overall construction requirements. The architect and the property's management teams also met high standards of sustainability aligned with the LEED model of energy and water conservation, site stewardship and resource efficiency. Landscape watering requirements have been essentially halved through the use of native plantings and mechanical water control systems that efficiently divert storm water for landscape irrigation. As a result of these and similar conservation practices, Three Eldridge Place has reduced estimated energy consumption to approximately 10.5 percent below average levels and earned the ENERGY STAR® label. Sustainability initiatives focused on the creation of "green" working environments that maximize natural daylight and reduce overall energy costs passed through to tenants. Indoor air quality was enhanced by low-emitting building materials, pollutant control systems and chemically-safe cleaning products and practices. In addition to lower energy costs, these programs promote employee health and productivity. Potential benefits for tenants include higher employee satisfaction, lower absenteeism and reduced medical costs.

Brazilian Civil Engineering Firm Figueiredo Ferraz Earns Autodesk BIM Experience Award

March 11, 2010

Multidisciplinary Transportation, Infrastructure and Urban Development Projects Demonstrate Integrated Building Information Modeling (BIM) Process SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a world leader in 2D and 3D design, engineering and entertainment software, announced that Figueiredo Ferraz, one of Brazil’s foremost engineering companies, has been selected to receive an Autodesk BIM Experience Award for its application and promotion of Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a process for large-scale government projects. The award also recognizes the firm’s use of AutoCAD Civil 3D software for all of its current civil engineering projects; Autodesk Revit Structure software for bridge, viaduct and tunnel design projects; as well as Autodesk 3ds Max Design software for visualizations. One of the firm’s recent BIM process-based projects targets environmental recovery for the Sapolandia, Franco and the Quarenta watercourses in Manaus, Brazil. Currently under construction, this government project will protect these watersheds and improve the quality of life for nearby residents and businesses. The project includes urban renewal of the land adjacent to the watercourses, implementation of drains and sewer systems, and construction of bridges and pedestrian overpasses. The Figueiredo Ferraz design team used AutoCAD Civil 3D software to develop several sustainable design alternatives for both watercourses, including plans for watercourse channeling, drainage systems and traffic circulation. The team aggregated existing geographic information system (GIS) and survey data in a BIM-based design model to efficiently create, visualize and evaluate design options. BIM design processes enabled the team to react more quickly to design decisions and changes, helping to keep the construction on schedule and avoid downtime when seasonal flooding of the Amazon limits waterfront construction. BIM was also valuable for cross-disciplinary design coordination with the project architect and other members of the extended design team. In addition, the team transferred its design models into 3ds Max Design software to create project visualizations for design reviews, approvals and public outreach efforts.

Whirlpool Corporation Receives Highest Honor With 22nd ENERGY STAR Award

March 03, 2010

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (March 1, 2010) — Whirlpool Corporation, the world’s leading home appliance manufacturer, has been recognized with the 2010 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The award recognizes the company’s continued leadership in offering consumers energy and water efficiency through its leading home appliance brands. This is the company’s eleventh top ENERGY STAR award and fifth consecutive Sustained Excellence win. Whirlpool has been honored with 22 ENERGY STAR awards overall, more than any other appliance manufacturer. According to a 2009 Whirlpool Corporation survey conducted in conjunction with Harris Interactive, energy efficiency is more important than ever in the purchase decision of consumers shopping for major appliances. The majority of U.S. consumers (59 percent) said they would rather spend more money now to save energy (and money) later when it came to home appliances. The company praised the federal government’s recent enforcement actions that help ensure consumers’ confidence as they purchase ENERGY STAR qualified major appliances. These actions will help ensure manufacturers of appliances are held accountable to deliver the energy savings they promise. In turn, consumers will be able to confidently use the Energy Guide label to make energy performance comparisons among brands while shopping, and to attain, in real world use, the energy efficiency promised when they purchased the appliance. Whirlpool has been involved in helping to set and define federal energy standards since their inception in the 1970s. “EPA is recognizing Whirlpool Corporation with our highest ENERGY STAR award - the 2010 Sustained Excellence Award,” said Gina McCarthy, EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation. “Whirlpool Corporation’s continued leadership and commitment to energy efficiency is a testament to what we can accomplish to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect our global environment.” Whirlpool Corporation offers some of the most water and energy efficient products on the market, in the kitchen and the laundry room and across all price points. - ENERGY STAR(R) qualified washers are one of the leaders in energy and water savings. Replacing a washer made before 2000 with a new ENERGY STAR(R) model can save up to $135 annually according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Whirlpool Corporation offers both front- and top-load high-efficiency washers. For example, the Whirlpool Duet(R) front-load washer uses 74 percent less water and 80 less energy, the Maytag Performance Series front-load washer uses 70 percent less water and 70 percent less energy and the new Amana Tandem(R) front-load washer uses 73 percent less water and 71 percent less energy, all compared to pre-2004 conventional top-load washers. The Maytag Bravos(R) top-load laundry pair uses 70 percent less water and 67 percent less energy and the Whirlpool Cabrio(R) top-load laundry pair uses 71 percent less water and 69 percent less energy, compared to pre-2004 conventional top-load washers. - Replacing a refrigerator made before 2000 with a new ENERGY STAR(R) model can save approximately $40 annually according to the DOE. The Whirlpool brand offers the industry’s most energy efficient side-by-side refrigerator. By exceeding efficiency standards by 30 percent, the Whirlpool brand Resource Saver(TM) refrigerator exceeds the EPA’s ENERGY STAR guidelines, helping consumers reduce their family’s carbon footprint. This model uses less energy than a 60-watt light bulb and is the most energy efficient side-by-side refrigerator ever. - Replacing a dishwasher made before 2000 with a new ENERGY STAR(R) model can save approximately $50 annually according to the DOE. The new Superba EQ models from KitchenAid are the best dishwashers ever from the brand that pioneered home dishwashers 60 years ago. Tests show they perform better and dry better than competitive models and are the quietest dishwashers in the industry. At 56 percent greater efficiency than the minimum federal energy standards, they are even eligible for an energy rebate in some states. “We look forward to continuing our alignment with both the EPA and DOE to help to build on the integrity of the ENERGY STAR label,” said Tom Catania, vice president, Government Relations, Whirlpool Corporation. “We also are helping to identify ways to provide new ways to conserve our natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including helping to create unifying standards for the smart electricity grid.” In 2009, Whirlpool announced a commitment to make all the electronically controlled appliances it produces — everywhere in the world — capable of receiving and responding to signals from smart grids by 2015. AirLess(TM) Water Valve Saves Energy, Shrinks Water Bills

March 02, 2010

Cutting-edge technology provides a sustainable solution for greening both businesses and homes TAMPA, Fla., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- It's arguable that the only thing that's free in life is the air around us. But even air can have a hefty price tag, when it comes to trapped oxygen that moves through water pipelines and into homes and businesses every day, everywhere. Most water pipelines operate inefficiently because of this trapped oxygen, which water meters measure right along with the water itself. When business owners or homeowners pay their water bills, they're unknowingly shelling out money for sizeable amounts of air that have been carried through their pipes as well. In response, AirLess(TM) Valve USA, LLC, a company that's committed to developing earth-friendly technologies, is announcing its latest groundbreaking solution: the AirLess(TM) Water Valve. Thanks to a precision-engineered, mechanical valve, the AirLess(TM) valve actually works to prevent the meter from reading the air. This cutting-edge technology is shrinking water bills by at least 15 to 30 percent and delivering water in the most efficient manner to date.

Amazing Results with New Insulation Technique, Tonzon Showcased at Eco-Build

March 01, 2010

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With only 30 gram of thermal insulation per square meter the excessive heat flux through the wall behind a radiator is blocked, with 40 gram per square meter the water in your bathtub will stay warm for over an hour and with 60 gram per square meter the ground floor of your house will get even warmer than the air above it and this does not cost energy. These insulation techniques showcased at Tonzon stand 2198, Eco-Build 2010 in London from 2-4 March, will save energy instead. Scientists are amazed about the capabilities of Tonzon's Thermocushion. It only weighs 60 gram per square metre, which is less than normal paper. However, a floor fitted with Thermocushions from below get an U-value less then 0.22 W/sq m.K. (Rd>4,35 sq mK/W). They warm the floor to a temperature that is even higher than the air above it. Just by saving energy. Is the Dutch Tonzon company trying to sell us some kind of perpetual motion? The mystery is resolved at www.tonzon.tv where an animated diagram explains the energy flow in the house. Also the Thermocushion is ecologically very sound since transport and production costs are minimal.
