Bosch Home Appliances Selected for Breakthrough Prefabricated, Sustainable LivingHomes(R); Renowned for Their Efficiency and High Quality, Bosch Appliances Are Featured in the Company's First Full-Time Model Home

August 28, 2006

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 2006--Known for setting industry standards in energy- and water-efficiency, Bosch home appliances have achieved a new environmental distinction by being selected to equip the kitchen and laundry of the LivingHomes(R) model home, a breakthrough concept in prefabricated, sustainable housing. Located in Santa Monica, Calif., the recently constructed home has received the highest rating possible from the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) new pilot, LEED(R) for Homes rating system, making it the first residential project in the country to attain a Platinum rating and setting a new national standard in sustainable construction. A key factor in the home's high level of sustainability are the Bosch appliances including a high-efficiency and ultra quiet dishwasher, front loading washer and dryer, and an ENERGY STAR(R) qualified refrigerator. "As a company, LivingHomes is committed to building some of the healthiest, most ecologically considered production homes available," said Steve Glenn, LivingHomes CEO and founder. "That is why we made it a priority to select products, like Bosch appliances, that deliver beautifully on the ideals of environmental efficient performance, quality engineering and modern design and help qualify the home as an Energy Star(R) home." LivingHomes promises to redefine the concept of "green" housing by marrying the highest levels of sustainability and good design from world-class architects at a cost considerably less than similarly constructed site-built homes. These steel-framed homes are prefabricated in a factory to ensure "green" friendly construction and reduction of waste. To dramatically reduce energy usage, they are equipped with solar power, radiant heating, natural ventilation, LED lighting, high-performance glass and high levels of insulation. The Bosch appliances, low-flow faucets, dual-flush toilets, gray-water irrigation system, rooftop garden and the use of recycled materials further aid in reducing the home's ecological footprint. The Bosch appliances featured in the LivingHome include: Evolution(TM) 800 Series Dishwasher (SHE99C05UC): Leading the way in energy efficiency, every Bosch dishwasher has earned the ENERGY STAR(R) label, exceeding federal energy standards by up to 48%. All Bosch dishwashers feature SENSOTRONIC(TM) technology, which checks soil levels and adjusts water and temperature levels accordingly -- saving water and energy. This system ensures that Bosch dishwashers use as little as 3.1 gallons of water per cycle. Bosch's energy-saving Condensation Drying(TM) system uses the final rinse's latent heat that is stored in the stainless steel walls to hygienically dry dishes. At only 44 decibels, this is the quietest dishwasher currently manufactured in the United States. Evolution Refrigerator (B19CS80SNS): Bosch's new ENERGY STAR refrigeration uses sensors to constantly measure temperature to provide consistent cooling and control the frequency of the defrost cycle. The defrost cycle will only run when needed, unlike some refrigerators that run on a timed schedule even if the cycle is not needed. By placing the temperature control on the outside of the refrigerator, the temperature can be adjusted without opening the door, which prevents the loss of the cool air inside. 700 Series 30" Single Convection Oven (HBL745AUC): The 700 Series offers efficient, sophisticated technology in a streamlined package. The foundation of its performance is Bosch's exclusive Genuine European Convection(TM), which combines an electronic thermostat with a 2,500-watt dual-ring third element surrounding a two-speed convection fan to produce accurate, even heat throughout the cavity and reduces cooking times up to 30%. This ingenious system allows you to simultaneously cook a full meal of sweet and savory foods without flavor transfer, offering even more time and energy savings. NGT Series 30" 4 Burner Cooktop (NGT74xUC): Bosch gas cooktops are manufactured of 98% recyclable materials with sophisticated European styling and advanced cooking features. Nexxt(TM) Premium Washer (WFMC6400UC): Bosch Nexxt(TM) Washers use less energy than any other washer on the market -- even other front loaders. Compared to the average top-loader, it cuts energy usage by up to 76 percent a year, saving about 70 gallons of water a week for a family of four. The Nexxt Washer has earned the highest achievable ENERGY STAR rating available, already meeting 2007 Federal Regulatory Standards, and can clean a full load of clothes using as little as 10.6 gallons of water. Nexxt(TM) Premium Dryer (WTMC6300US): To gently dry clothes, the Nexxt Dryer employs the DUOTRONIC(TM) system, a combination of moisture and temperature sensors that automatically determine when the clothes are dry to prevent damage from over-drying. For extended wrinkle protection, the Nexxt Premium Dryer offers WRINKLEBLOCK(TM) to prevent wrinkles from setting in and reduce ironing. Like the renowned Bosch dishwashers, both washer and dryer are engineered to be exceptionally quiet in operation. About Bosch home appliances Bosch home appliances is part of BSH Home Appliances Corporation, a fully-owned subsidiary of Bosch and Siemens Hausgerate GmbH, the third largest appliance manufacturer in the world. Inspired by the lifestyles of today's discerning consumers, all Bosch products combine superior performance and excellent quality with unrivalled ease of use. Extending its care philosophy beyond the immediate home, Bosch is the leader in environmentally-friendly home appliances. Just one more sign of Bosch's commitment to improving quality of life through the relentless pursuit of perfection. www.Boschappliances.com

Report Reveals the Future of the Vast Coatings and Surface Modification Technology Market

August 25, 2006

NEW YORK, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine a non-adhesive, medicated, artificial heart valve coating that prevents blood platelets and bacteria from sticking. Picture the harnessing of thin layers of bacteria to fight the biofouling of ships and other marine systems. Visualize ultrananocrystalline diamond as a hermetic coating on bio-implants, and you begin to enter the futuristic world uncovered by Advances in Coatings and Surface Modification Technology, a new report from market research publisher Specialists in Business Information (SBI). While the market goes widely unnoticed, it is huge. For instance, an estimated $2 billion per year of the U.S.'s gross domestic product is invested solely to prevent and remediate damage from rust, one of the main drivers in the coatings industry. Coatings also play a crucial role in the success of medical systems; gears and turbines; near-infrared optical sensors; biocompatible electronics; industrial sealants; and antireflectants, among others. Yet challenges abound, as the need to produce both economically competitive and defect-free coatings often comes along with a high environmental impact. Advances in miniaturization, extreme heat situations, such as those found with aerospace turbine engines, and degradation issues continue to pose unique challenges as well. Advances in Coatings and Surface Modification Technology is a comprehensive study of the market for a variety of coatings and technologies primarily affecting the electronic, industrial, detection, solar, and medical fields. It reviews significant technical developments, discusses potential applications, and provides status reports of the various stages of development of key technologies.

Today's wood floors come in a variety of styles, including traditional strip and parquet, but one of the most popular trends right now is wide plank floors. Wide plank floors are defined as wood floors that are at least three inches wide, but can measure up to a foot wide. Wide plank floors can come in a variety of species, and because of their increased width, they require special care during the installation process. Because wide plank floors respond more readily to moisture fluctuations, they are more prone to cup when excessive moisture is present in the subfloor. A professional wood flooring installer can test for moisture content before, during and after the job to ensure a successful installation. The general rule of thumb is that the wider the plank, the more expertise will be required to successfully install the floor. In other words, wide plank wood flooring installations are not for the first-time do-it-yourself weekend warrior wood flooring installer. Wide plank floors lend themselves to a variety of decorating styles, from elegant and formal living rooms and dining rooms, to comfortable and casual family rooms and eat-in kitchens. They can be polished and perfect, or weather-worn and antiqued, depending on your own personal decorating preferences and lifestyle.

Thanks to Synergis Training DCO Lighting Now Uses Autodesk Inventor Software More Effectively and Efficiently

August 09, 2006

QUAKERTOWN, Pa., Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Synergis(R) Technologies Engineering Design Solutions Division today announced that as a result of the customized training it delivered, Day-Brite | Capri | Omega (DCO) Lighting has become dramatically more knowledgeable with its Autodesk Inventor software and raised the overall productivity level of both their Product Engineering and Design Engineering Departments. Prior to training, most of DCO Lighting's engineering specialists were unable to work in Autodesk Inventor at all. Now all are able to work more effectively and accomplish tasks they would not have even attempted before training. DCO Lighting is noted for the wide array of indoor and outdoor lighting products they develop for the commercial, residential and industrial markets. "Synergis is an excellent company to collaborate with for training and support. They worked to help us find the best solution and strived to meet our needs quickly," said Nikki Roaten, senior documentation control engineer for Day-Brite | Capri | Omega Lighting. "The training we received was top notch. It was well-organized and our trainer was very knowledgeable and prepared. Many of our design engineers have expressed how their training experience has helped them use the software more effectively." The in-depth training program that Synergis delivered onsite at DCO Lighting covered the product features with which the company's engineers were unfamiliar and was customized to build their skills and address their specific requests. The training laid the groundwork for Product Engineering to begin using Autodesk Inventor software for product customizations and to maintain Inventor projects created by the DCO design engineers. Holding the training at their work site allowed DCO Lighting to make the most of their time and have a large group of engineers trained in a short period, including some who would have likely never received any formal training. "There's no doubt good training can significantly shorten a company's learning curve and reduce downtime. At Synergis, we take that to heart. We do whatever it takes to ensure our students have made a dramatic leap in their knowledge level and are primed for success with every training," said David Sharp, President ad Chief Executive Officer of Synergis Technologies. "We are dedicated to delivering a consistently high level of service throughout our entire organization." "The service we get from Synergis is nothing less than excellent. They continually amaze me with their speedy, efficient, and friendly service," said Roaten. "I always know I can count on Synergis to remain involved until they have helped us find a solution to any problem. We couldn't ask for anything better." http://redirect.aecdaily.com/s18122/www.dcolighting.com/

''Prairie Skyscraper'' Exhibition Opens at National Building Museum Sponsored by Copper Development Association; Price Tower, Frank Lloyd Wright's Only Built Skyscraper, Features Copper Facade, Interiors and Furnishings

August 08, 2006

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 7, 2006--The Copper Development Association (CDA) is pleased to announce its sponsorship of "Prairie Skyscraper: Frank Lloyd Wright's Price Tower," an exhibition at the National Building Museum that honors the 50th anniversary of the completion of the historic building in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The 19-story, 37,000-square-foot Price Tower is the first and only skyscraper to be designed and built by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. The building, which prominently features copper throughout its interior and exterior architecture and design, is a culmination of Wright's decades long desire to build a modern, multi-use skyscraper. "The Copper Development Association is proud to sponsor this fine exhibit that examines Frank Lloyd Wright's vision of the modern skyscraper," stated Ken Geremia, communications manager for CDA. "The Price Tower in many ways is a tribute to the versatility of copper. Its exterior design is highlighted by copper paneling that melds beautifully with intricate copper accents throughout the interior, which is filled with furniture, artwork and accessories that also prominently feature copper in both natural and patinated forms. Few architects could match Wright when it came to incorporating themes in his structures, and in the Price Tower he used copper to its fullest advantage. We encourage everyone to visit this exhibit because it chronicles one of the most architecturally important buildings of the twentieth century." This unique edifice, located in the middle of America's heartland, incorporates the use of copper throughout its entire structure. On the exterior, copper panels line the building from ground to roof. Each panel was acid-washed prior to application, , bringing out the green patina that would have taken many years to form in Oklahoma's arid climate. In the interior, copper plays an integral role in the building's functionality. It is found just about everywhere, from the paneling and artwork that covers the walls to fireplaces in the guestrooms. The versatile metal was also used to create the coffee tables, chairs and stools in the building's lobby and public spaces. The three-month exhibition, which ends September 17, includes over 100 scale reproductions, drawings, photographs, and actual building components including copper panels and specially fabricated window louvers. Also on display are the furnishings such as tables, chairs and a desk designed exclusively for the Price Tower by Frank Lloyd Wright himself.

Tychi Systems Announces New Versions of BioKnob(TM); Silver and Gold Finishes Plus New Software Now Shipping

August 08, 2006

SALEM, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 8, 2006--Tychi Systems announced Version 1.06 of their BioKnob(TM) fingerprint-activated door lock indicating new software. Such upgrades, common with electronics and computers, are not as common with door locks. According to the company, performance is an important differentiator with biometric locks, that is not a big factor with mechanical locks. Bill Kiniry, sales manager for Tychi, says, "Mechanical locks just lock or unlock, so the focus is on looks. But with fingerprint locks, how well they work is important. Many on the market are unacceptable -- some take dozens of tries to get in. The BioKnob has the best performance on the market and we keep making it better. We know our design is spectacular, but we are most proud of the performance." Vince Slepack, owner of the Balport Lock and Safe company in Newport Beach, CA, who is one of the early dealers for the BioKnob, confirmed the importance of performance. "I have a demo unit that looks pretty just sitting there, but when I show people how it unlocks with a brush of my fingers, that's when they realize it's not just an ordinary lock!" Kiniry says, "We are seeking more dealers like Vince who can demonstrate the features of the BioKnob. There is a huge opportunity for such dealers and we are offering a special deal to help them try out the BioKnob. Those who can demonstrate it can catch some of the biometric excitement sweeping the world at this time." Tychi Systems started shipping the BioKnob early this year and has doubled production at their company-owned factory in China. The company is located in Salem, NH, where it does final assembly, test and technical support. Tychi Systems is the only US company to develop a stand-alone, fingerprint lock. It set up its own manufacturing facility in China to better control its quality and protect its intellectual property, but all customer relationships and support is out of Salem, NH.

New Housing Trend Blends Disaster Resistance With Environmental Awareness and Fine Design

August 03, 2006

DEWEES ISLAND, S.C., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- With rising ecological awareness and increasing utility prices impacting everyday activities, environmentally responsible or "green" building is making news in residential construction. New technology and greater availability of green products are enabling forward-thinking builders and developers to produce projects that appeal to luxury buyers and renters who seek to lower energy consumption and make more earth-conscious choices. For John Porretto, a green home is not just an architectural choice, it's an environmental benefit. Unlike the green homes of past decades, today's homes feature energy efficiency, structural integrity, safety, health, and even fine design. Currently, he is putting the finishing touches on a masterfully designed, earth-honoring, energy-efficient, low-maintenance, simply exquisite house on Dewees Island, South Carolina, a paradigm-setting, environmentally conscious community. Given recent hurricane disasters, deciding to build on a barrier island with common construction approaches can be risky business. This home is built to last for generations in harsh coastal environments and derives its integrity from stamped engineering foundation and framing plans, timber frames and structural insulated panels. This home serves as a prototype for truly ecologically sound construction and ultra-low maintenance. The timber framing lends unrivaled strength and interior beauty, while the use of structural panels offers superior insulation and durability. All the wood is reclaimed, from standing dead trees or sustainably harvested. The closed loop, geothermal HVAC system and insulated windows increase efficiency. Windows look onto the marsh and the Intracoastal Waterway, inviting coastal breezes to freshen the air and ample sunlight to brighten the rooms. Natural materials maintain healthy indoor air quality, while attention to small but significant details marks the house as authentically "green."
